we just can't seem to get a break lately. Hossa comes back and then we lose Kane and Saad. Now Bickell, and right when he decides to start playing, too. - Q...argh

A player is draft eligible from age 18 until 20 years 6 months. Carey is 22, which means he would have been eligible for the draft in 2010-2012. All players must officially "opt-in" to be eligible to be picked. He went unpicked, so either he was not highly thought of at the time, or never opted-in.
My guess is that he was maybe a late bloomer. I heard something with his college coach earlier, who stated that he didnt think he was NHL ready as of yet. - TheTrob
any player over 18 can be drafted. "opting-in" was eliminated years ago. |

This will also give Q a chance to refine his Black Ace crew based upon some actual game play rather than drills and scrimmages.

Another good point. Though I suspect they already have who they will add pretty much set. This will give a better idea of who will fit in where though. |

He played through a bad knee injury during last years playoff run so he has shown he will play through injuries when he has to. But I too was hoping to see him ramp up his game heading into the playoffs. - paulr
He certainly gutted it out last spring, but if he's aching now ? Not sure he'll go the distance when the physicality intensifies FOR REAL. |

From the NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines:
Entry Draft Eligibility
All players age 19 or older [(i) any player who will be age 18 on or before September 15 in the year in which such Entry Draft is held, or (ii) reaches his 19th birthday between September 16 and December 31, both dates included, next following Entry Draft, can attain eligibility by delivering to the League a written notice (Opt in Form) prior to the later of May 1, or seven days following the date such player finishes competing on his team in the year in which such draft is to be held.] are eligible for claim in the Entry Draft, except:
(i) A Player on the Reserve List of a Club, other than as a try-out;
(ii) A player who has been claimed in two prior Entry Drafts;
(iii) A player who previously played in the League and became a free agent pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement;
(iv) A plyer age 21 or older who had played hockey for at least one season in North America when he was age 18, 19 or 20 |

A couple things on that. I don't think we know what it is, could be a fluke thing like Kane's. It could also be that the team knows he's been bringing it and is just being cautious because everyone saw important he was Wednesday. And, I'd bet he'd be playing tonight if it were a playoff game.
Hopefully this is a small bump in the road, because he's been fun to watch lately. - mohel

Not unless you're 20.5 or under, Bob Dylan! Hell, even Rollpards isn't draft-elibile anymore if the earlier post is correct.
Elbows, you are now categorized as a high-end UFA, available to the highest bidder (which shouldn't take long...). |

Hey, Wiz. I appreciate your work on the draft and prospects. Help us all out here with a little perspective. Just for grins, opine on this: If Matt Carey were thrown into the 2014 NHL draft (instead of being a free agent able to pick his team), what round would he be drafted in this year. And while you're at it, same for LeBlanc and Raanta last year, and Schultz the year before. I include Schultz because what i had read indicated he was well above these others in quality.
Thanks. I think the board will appreciate this perspective on the value of these "free draft picks" of late. - Cmonalready
Of course I defer to wiz on the following, but I would suggest that our Carey signing allows Bowman greater flexility on the 2014 draft strategy. Gamble on a hit or miss type, best player available, best player available at a certain position? This strategy could change pick-to-pick.
What I am concerned about is not so much a number two center. That issue will continue to be managed as has been, or as some prospects are able to take someone's job, at that time is an opportunity to possibly add a #2 center. Also if you really do sign Kesler...
Now Wiz ...I did stress that I am not worried how the #2 center plays itself out. Do not go accusing of anything wrongly.
I am thinking it might be advantageous to draft a big sized dman. Not necessarily a bruiser, just someone mobile enough who can tie up or effectively handle the larger size forwards (those who are pugnacious like Backes). Seabrook and Keith will be here throughout their next contract? So having a dman develop is only going to be a big deal if this dman prospect projects as a top two pair. I mean, Johns has size but he is probably never a top pair for projection for anyone.
Bowman has identified and drafted several forwards who will be role players in Chg. Some may in time become good enough to be utilized in a greater role.
Carey and Tervainen may reach a ceiling of good # 2 offensive but it is too early to say they could become better than that. Yet on the blueline I suspect there is no prospect who would challenge our top three and Leddy for bulk of playing time. I mean Norell, Fournier maybe are second pair projection but let us see them in the AHL before we ascertain anything. I just would prefer a big size dman, the meaner the better. This big size dman would have to be capable in gap, reaction time, moves feet well, can make a good first pass, can read plays. Mobile enough. The great skater and offensive game could be average and that is ok as long as he meets the other criteria. |

Jeff Beck - fattybeef
Fom Wayne's World 2
Del Preston: So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show. |
