They're probably going to go with some discount veteran, a la Brian Boucher.

But I'd really prefer them to pick somebody more in Mason's age group, who is good enough to push him for playing time. Devan Dubnyk might be a worthy reclamation, Chad Johnson from Boston has a history of being solid, Magnus Hellberg from Nashville, or peruse many of the interesting options over in the SHL/Liiga for the next Niemi/Fasth/Lack.

Heeter needs a couple of more pro seasons before they should be bringing him up, IMO.

I'd want a veteran goalie with a lot more experience then Johnson or Hellberg as the backup.

who will the Flyers back up be next year?
who do you want it to be?

- wilsonecho91

emery's played well enough to get a contract, imho, but i wouldn't mind if cal heeter got a shot. it would certainly cost less.

They're all pretty solid back-ups, if Mason can start 55-60 games and be solid. Greiss is 28 already. I was surprised at that.
- Jsaquella

wow. didn't realize that. Also surprised to see that Downie is only 26. Feel like he should be 35 already.

I would have loved if the team was much better off and could have given Heeter a game or two.

The reason I think they'll choose Heeter is because they never value the backup goalie spot. They will always look for the cheapest option so they can use as much money as possible on top of the market talent.

- PhillySportsGuy

Agreed. A luxury they didn't have.

We'll see what they do with their goaltenders next year. Stolarz will, most likely, be with the Phantoms. They may like the idea of splitting time between Heeter and Stolarz in the AHL while getting a veteran backup in the NHL. I want them to get a legit backup though. I don't want some bargain basement guy so we can somehow fit Vanek on the team.

I wouldn't mind Heeter eventually assuming that role, but that should likely take place due to an injury call up or something. I don't want him being the #2 guy because the #3 guy is likely to be even less battle tested.

I don't think they need to spend their available money on a top 6 forward. Not a necessity.

Reading the comments made me sad. What about the children? What about them? Sex ed starts in elementary school for Christ sake.

Is it distasteful? Sure. Speaking the truth is sometimes tough.
