Yeah. My grandparents used to go down to spring training every year, and they met up with this couple who watched my dad & aunt while my grandparents were at the games. That couple ended up being his grandparents, and the families kept in touch. He got my dad, mom, cousin, my grandparents, and me free tix to a Seattle series when Camden Yards first opened, and I probably have, by far, the largest Tino Martinez card collection in the world.

I think skill has a little something to do with it as well. In fact, I'll take skill over attitude.

Loved that show... of course I had to watch it in reruns.

A Zherdev jersey? As in singular? Oh no sir, you are WAAAAY off. Not only do I have a wardobe full of Zherdev jerseys, I also have Zherdev underpants and a custom-knit Zherdev bedding set.

I think there is an internal budget.

Well if theyre spending less on the roster, they can use more for other things. Thats a what a lot of teams do during rebuilds. Thats what the Cubs are doing.

thats actually really cool.

and god, do i miss baseball cards.

It is. We stayed at the same hotel as the players. Got to meet Edgar and Jay Buhner.

Kind of a cool story from that trip: we were sitting with the players' families (minus the Griffey's). Tino was still relatively unknown then, and his grandfather is talking to this guy. The stadium is DEAD SILENT, and the guy yells out, "COME ON TINO, HIT ONE FOR YOU POP POP!" I kid you not, the very next pitch was a towering home run. One of the coolest things I've ever seen at a sporting event.

Okay. You have a team of Zherdev's and Cechmanek's, and I'll get some really inspired local auto mechanics, and we'll see who's better.

that explains my memory of him wearing an orange flyers jersey on the show. i wish i could find a pic of that. a quick google search turns up nothing.

He was also a Drexel grad and was buddies later in life with none other than Pasquale Croce, himself.

So, I wouldn't be shocked to hear Chuck Barris liked the Flyers....

thats awesome. i wish i still had the zest for just baseball as a concept that i did back when i was younger. i still follow the phillies very closely, but the game itself used to be larger than life.

They have to save some money to keep players' mistress' (aka "Road Beef" as Canseco so eloquently put it) pregnancies quiet. I hear that cost has skyrocketed in recent years.

Now we're going in circles. They weren't in a good position to spend less on the roster.

Yeah. I think that's all sports to a degree. I think the internet, social media, and the ease of access to tickets has kind of killed some of the "awe" factor of sports when I was younger. I mean, every now and then, I got to actually see the Phillies or Flyers in person if my dad was lucky enough to get a pair of tickets. Now, I can click a mouse a few times and go see them whenever I want.

My post was far more about life then about sports! But since you want to make it about sports, we can do that. I think that Giroux and Zherdev were pretty close in terms of skill and talent. What separates Giroux from Zherdev?

Attitude is part of it. But my point is, if you don't have any skill to begin with, it doesn't matter how great your attitude is because you're not capable of competing.

It's the old Sutter brothers joke.

A GM, I think it was Lou Nanne of the North Stars, but not sure, was asked if he'd want a team entirely made up of Sutter brothers.

He said, " That'd be nice, but I'd want somebody who could stickhandle, pass, score goals and skate well"

You need a mix of both. There's quite a few guys who had Zherdev's work ethic who ended up with their names on the Stanley Cup, but in almost all those cases there's a name like Messier or Sutter next to them.

The what good is to have Howard and Utley? Look back to when they re-signed Howard and Utley. Right then and there was when the choice had to be made. Go on or walk away from those players. What would've happened with the fanbase if they did that? Would ownership have approved?
