perhaps that was sarcasm?

It was. Although I stopped reading after a few paragraphs. Boring article. I'm immune to emotional stuff.

Sad to hear about the kid passing.

I would not consider two decades ago to be recent. They still had the glow puck to look forward to, for reference. Phones were still bolted to the wall, and regardless of the cost mail still required stamps rather than an internet connection.

I have an old phone jack in my kitchen with no phone and my 7 YO son noticed it over the weekend. Explaining that a phone used to be there and it was only a phone you spoke into and you couldn't go anywhere with it was a 20 minute endeavor.

He thinks phones are these things Daddy carries in his shirt pocket that he gets to play games with once in awhile.

Yes, goaltending was awful.
So were the wooden sticks compared to the composite ones today.
So were the gloves he wore which severely restricted his stickhandling/shooting.
So was the fact that teams were allowed to clutch/grab/slash him all day long.
So was the fact that the 2-line rule existed in his career.

And the goalie at 1:12 is awful

One could say the game finally caught up with Gretzky rather than saying that Gretzky had it easy.

I still have a phone (cordless) in my house because I get horrible cell reception at home.

Interesting take on why Canadian teams haven't won a cup in forever and where the league should have each of the franchises.

- PhillySportsGuy

Interesting read.

This might feed into the Cubs allusion, but it sure seems like all the Canadian franchises have suffered from poor management recently... Nonis and Burke incredibly on to ruining their second Canadian teams... Gainey and Feaster and JFJ... Craig Button and Tambellini... its like a who's who of disastrous GMs.

I think part of the problem is ownership pandering to fans... get the truculent, traditionalist GM who will go out and sign David Clarkson because he kind of plays like Shane Doan.

The Canadiens won a Cup in 1993. That is somewhat recent.
A gallon of gas wasn't 57 cents in 1993, and a stamp wasn't a dime.

- PLindbergh31

True... but all NHL franchises, even the most decorated one in league history, have had Cup-less spells of multiple decades.

Also, let's just suppose that the Flyers HAD won the Cup in 1987 instead of coming up just short. Let's suppose that, in the game 2 overtime won by Edmonton, that Brian Propp had not hit the post in the opening minute of OT but had scored instead. So then J.J. Daigneault's goal in Game 6 becomes the Cup winner instead of "merely" forcing what turned out to be a heartbreaking Game 7.

Would fans in Philly today really be THAT much more satisfied being 27 years removed from the Cup than the last Cup being 39 years ago? I think the answer to that is no.

I would, but only for one reason: a Flyers' Cup during my lifetime is on my bucket list. I want to be alive on this Earth when the Flyers win a Stanley Cup. So from that perspective, I would be fairly satisfied.

Very fair points Bill. I agree with you. I can't speak for other fans, can only speak for myself. Had the Flyers won in 87' I would have been old enough to appreciate it. I know they played that series shorthanded against a dynasty with I believe 8 Hall of Famers. I don't think the Flyers get enough credit for the Finals they played in 87'. That team was blood and guts personified.

I was still a literal parasite (instead of the figurative one I am today) at that point, so it wouldn't have done much for me.

Its a statical anomaly that the Flyers haven't won a cup since their last one. Based on the number of times they'd been to the playoffs and the finals, they should have at least 1 since.

A perfect example of that is the Phillies. They recently won a World Series. Went to another one, and went on a nice 5 year run or so. Now here we are a few years removed. And Phillies fans are already frustrated and losing patience with the team.

Same thing with the Sixers. They just won a Championship in 82-83..... Now one little measly 20 game losing streak, and fans have their panties in a bunch. They need to get a grip.

I'm losing patience because they're trying to win instead of starting a rebuild. Everyone but Ruben knows they won't be good this year.

The dumbing down of America. It makes me ill that people like Honey Boo Boo, the Kardashians, and all of these other scripted reality shows. These people get rich, because there are a bunch of mindless fools that tune into this dribble religiously. The fact there is an audience for that type of garbage is a disgrace.
