Kesler is not worth 3 1st round picks. That in essence what that offer is. Not happening unless Vancouver retains a maximum 50% of his salary which again is also not happening

Pretty good spin on this logic...

Since 2008-09:
Blackhawks have won 10 playoff series
Bruins -9
Penguins - 7
Red Wings - 6
Kings - 6
Caps - 3

Yes... the Blackhawks are the best of the best right now, but let's not get carried away and compare the Pens to the Caps in the playoffs.

And the Blackhawks haven't been without their two best forwards for 200+ games during that span either.

The Hawks also should have been Kovalchuk'd for that Hossa deal. They will end up paying for it down the line under the new CBA

How does Kesler being a former 1st round pick figure in our your equation?

Any time a player goes public with his desire to be moved, you don't get back what the player is worth if said player is good. Shero dealt with an idiot in Carolina and maximized his return. There are other idiot GMs out there, but I think Gillis is one of the bigger idiots in the league. I wouldn't trust Gillis at all.

No kidding. The bidding war would get pretty big for kesler. How many centers like that become available these days? The UFA classes are mediocre, the only decent players get way overpaid with full NTC's. Hell, 2nd line rental types like Moulson having an asking price of a 1st plus prospect, is Kesler worth the same or just a bit more than a couple of months of Matt Moulson? (frank) no! Everyone wants scoring and to be strong down the middle. Acquiring a guy like Kesler literally improves your team in every area. ES, PP, PK, Offense, Defense, Faceoffs etc.

That whole thing makes no sense to me. The new cap penalty rules should have been grandfathered in, under the previous CBA when those contracts were actually signed there were no ramifications for having a player retire early. I'm surprised teams like Vancouver, Detroit, Chicago, etc aren't fighting this. NJ losing a 1st was the worst, I would be furious until this day as a Devils fan.

Haha. It was an oversimplification since Kesler and Sutter have both been in the league long enough to have their draft status thrown out the window.

And not as bad, but Keith's 13 year deal has a couple of garbage years at the end.

It will be interesting to see how they handle Toews and Kane's next deals.

I'm guessing they get something similar to Perry/Getzlaf maybe?

Well Kypreos says we are kicking the tires on Miller. Looks like Ray is trying to trade for everybody.

pens dont have a top 6 player to offer, there's no deal there at all, he's also not going to go from the top ice time forward in the league to 3rd line center at his age

The problem with a bidding war is that anyone that has the interest & assets to go after a Kesler right now is also right up against the cap most likely and can't fit him unless Van is willing to accept a bad contract back in return. Especially for a guy that asks for a trade. I don't know if he has a NMC or NTC or even a list of teams he'll accept a trade to, but if he does, that limits the potential for a bidding war even more.

That said, I don't think he fits the Pens at all.

If my pay was the same and my chances at a cup increased I'd be ok with it. However I'm not a professional athlete and my ego is way smaller. I don't think his minutes would decrease. Staal logged about 20 minutes a game here

Sutter straight across. Maybe include one of the defensive prospects not named Maatta.

I believe he has a NTC. Lets just hope he doesn't pull a MSL/Iggy. Knowing Kesler, he probably just wants to go to a big market in the states that has a decent team so that leaves a decent amount of teams in the equation, many who would likely be interested. Philly's loved him for a long time and we all know that Philly doesn't like losing a bidding war. And this trade isn't happening at the TDL anyways, it would very likely take place at the draft or around then when the cap goes up and a few more compliance buyouts are used, teams will have more cap space to acquire an Edler or Kesler.

I agree that the Pens are very unlikely as a fit.

At least... the cap seems to be jumping up every year. Maybe $9 mil per season?

Fun times ahead with those two able to be extended this summer, and E. Staal and Stamkos next summer.

I'm so glad that Crosby and Malkin are locked up, and at least we know what those numbers are.

Wow that's a tough question, I think that if the right deal came along I would trade anyone but Sid and Zach Sill.

Gillis would laugh and hang up at Sutter straight across and you know it. Maybe a defensive prospect? Sutter and one of them is a decent starting point. You're not getting him at the same price as what guys like Moulson will get traded for as rentals(!).

Toews seems like the kind of guy who will sacrifice some money to help the team, Kane would have a hard time demanding more than him.
