Correct - the Hawks cannot accumulate unused cap space because they have none. Unused LTIR space does not accumulate.
This whole thing about pro-rating salaries at the TDL is not technically accurate. The player's cap space number doesn't change throughout the year (unless retained by a team in a trade) - it is the acquiring team's cap space that changes during the year. Every day (could be every game) that a team is under the cap, it adds a pro-rated portion of the annual cap to its pile. This increases the annual salary that they can take on at the TDL. The more a team banks all year, the bigger the contract it can assume (this is the reason for the Rockford Shuttle) at the TDL.
It comes down to this - on capgeek there is the "Deadline Space" number. This is the amount of the ANNUAL salary a team can take on. It is not some pro-rated portion of the salary of the acquired player. Let's take Crosby as an example. Assume his contract has a $10M AAV. Were he to be traded at ANY time during the year, the acquiring team would need that capgeek "Deadline Space" number to be $10M+ on the day of the trade. - mohel
First pardon my use continual use of prorated...
Second...There is a cap impact by Khabibulin being on LTIR and it isn't all beneficial...Correct??

Yep, that who we can look at without trading a guy on the roster (other than Regin). Bickell would indeed be a great addition! - mohel
With Tavarez season ended, the NYI might toss in the white towel of surrender. Or at least their GM makes that good pp shot of Visnovsky available. For a pick or prospect. A depth dman who could help someone's powerplay.
I wish we could send Regin back to Long Island (If that happens you can celebrate by having a Long Island). If Kostka or Visnovsky in Chg, D Keith plays less PP. That means he is fresh -er. For both the playoff run and playoff grind. A condensed schedule means sometimes an improved PP (with Visnovsky) garners some much needed points. But the numbers probably do not work in Chg. |

If anyone wants to send a PM to me let me know unless you want to keep it off the thread for some reason.
This delivery system isn't the best and I neglected to answer someone for a week because I didn't see a notification...Only saw the note because another reader sent a PM.
Also....There is a reason hardly anyone wants about cap space etc....Sometimes I wish I didn't also. But there are many variables and it is important, albeit confusing.
I try to be accurate but sometimes not....That is the case with everything I write.
Sometimes I am correct in my thinking but a sentence could have been worded better....Missing one word at times could matter a lot.
Being wrong in the above ways is different than challenging an opinion.
My point is if anyone sees something they think is wrong or doesn't understand you can send me a direct message on Twitter...or here or a PM. Twitter is best.
I find it helpful as long as done in a respectful manner which has been the case.

On pro-rating. Just making sure it is understood that the player's salary for cap purposes doesn't change at all throughout the year. A $10M player on opening day is a $10M on Trade Deadline day. A team who is under the cap will see its deadline space continue to increase.
On Khabibulin - now that Kostka is gone the Hawks can take on $837K in salary (up to double that if the other team keeps salary). If Bulin were to suddenly come off LTIR and Raanta sent down, they would be under the cap by only $62K. If he came back they couldn't squeeze in even a low-salaried guy. Other than not being on the team at all, his LTIR status isn't hurting them at all, imo. |

A way the LTIR could have hurt is if they could have dumped him an ate salary.
What changes is not ever the cap hit but the amount that has to be absorbed by the acquiring team as the season erodes.

Not sure what you mean about the season eroding. A guy with a $2M annual salary (cap hit) can only be traded to a team with $2M in "available cap space" on the day of the trade. There is no eroding - they don't need to fit a portion of the salary; they need to fit the whole thing. The only thing that can change is for the acquiring team to get enough cap space to fit the $2M annual salary. The can do this by dumping a player, or by accumulating cap space by being under the limit during the year. This "accumulated unused cap space" gets added to the "Deadline Space" each day (or each game) by the pro-rated amount under the cap. You can acquire your $2M player only when you have accumulated enough space to fit the annual salary of that player. |

Kostka was with Norfolk with Lightning head coach Jon Cooper and others on the current Lightning roster when they won the AHL championship a few years ago. I suspect chemistry and familiarity factor in to the equation. |

How many Hawks sit out the 1st game back? I am going with 2. Toews and Keith. Sharp barely saw any ice time. Kane seems to run on an alternative fuel system. Guy never seems tired. Maybe Hammer instead of Keith. We all know Timex doesn't warrant time off. |

Actually I did mean the whole Olympics - should have remembered Mr. Davis.
Speaking of firsts: Jason Collins signed with the Nets - first openly gay player in a major spirt.

Keith runs on the same fuel as Kane, so he'll play. I think they'll all play, unless someone has a boo boo we're not aware of now. |

Zues could sit for another look at Regin and with the thought he'll play against Pittsburgh. But he's not sitting because he's worn out from the Olympics - he'll have more than a week between games, right? |

Good for him. I hope it isn't a publicity stunt by the Nets to be the answer to that trivia question forever (ahead of whoever drafts the football player - Sam, I think). |

My way of thinking on this stuff is like that of my 93 yr old Mom trying to change a DVD..
I see what u mean even though it doesn't sound like it ...what I know for sure is Bowman is in a tighter spot than last yr at this time unless he gets very creative.

The Kostka move could be for flexibility on a future trade or it could be as simple as being able to carry an extra forward. Morin has an 8 game scoring streak and from what I've read he has been playing well. Nordy could also be a possibility. - UnnamedSource
Could be but they lost an insurance policy they carried the entire season right before crunch time for 0...for what an extra forward? Who would sit?
