Players want it no doubt...If they get hurt they still get paid.
Could increase their marketability for endorsements... - Al
I'm sure that appearance fees for Toews, Keith and Seabrook in Canada went up significantly after 2010. |

Very true - I was talking more about future Games, though. - mohel
I hope there aren't future games. Maybe something along the lines of a World Cup every other or every four years played in August. Two weeks and done. |

They aren't completely mercenary: I'm sure there's a large element of "playing for your country".
Let's not get completely cynical. - StLBravesFan
My own personal belief is that the playing for the country thing is a large portion of what it is all about for many or most of them.

I hear ya', but playing high level games out of season seems to be asking for serious injuries, imo. |

P K Subban must be justifying it on that basis. What other reason would he give for flying 10 time zones away to sit around the Olympic Village for 2 weeks? |

To your bolded, has any team had to rely on its 8th defensemen and then won the cup? To my bolded, if you think the rental player is the piece you need to win a cup, how is Pirri not worth that? - rollpards19
Not that I can remember because those teams don't win the Cup....
But it isn't only about the playoffs....The Hawks could ruin their entire season if they lost 2 or 3 dmen in the beginning of March...and they had to play with a Peckham or someone similar for a month.
The Hawks have been blest...Although they were down to tag ends when they won the Cup concerning dmen but they were so good it didn't matter....This time it probably does matter and that's why they been keeping 8 up here.
Injuries can come in bunches...Calgary lost so many dmen a few years ago + other injuries they played with less than 20 skaters for some games...
The Canucks this season have used 11 different players on defense.
As for Pirri I didn't say he was too good to trade. I have been writing for quite awhile he could likely go by the deadline.
What I meant was if the Hawks only can acquire a player with a $1 mill annual salary or less....They probably don't need to trade Pirri...You can trade Morin or use draft picks.
Pirri is the brightest light in Rockford although not good enough to play here....Bowman may keep him in his pocket until the draft and then use him to sweeten a bigger deal.
Actually Pirri could be brought up as a Black Ace and could actually contibute down the stretch if need be. |

I think Bowman is done with trading for this season because he has no plan to move current roster players unless a fabulous one sided deal deal falls into his lap.
I've marked Peter Regin and P.M. Bouchard down as his deadline acquisitions. He has lots of depth on D, extra centers in Pirri and the 2 above. What else is he going to find in the trade market that he can fit under the cap or acquire for cheap? |

Plus he got Versteeg in November, so Stan has made movies. I think Pirri will be dealt at the draft. |

Don't know but all he can look for is another Handzus and that turned out to be a gift....At least for 3 months. The only way Wilson made that trade is because he was remodeling on the fly and his group needed an oil change.
And Handzus was not a $1 million player he was making over $2 mill if memory serves me. |

Gotcha, my bad for misinterpreting it.
To the Canucks point, and to the Hawks injuries in general, while it's partially lucky, its also not a coincidence in my mind. Torts' teams block every shot they can, that gets guys hurt. If one team blocks a ton of shots, and the other one doesn't its fair to assume the shot blocking team is going to get hurt more. The Hawks playing non-physical also helps a ton, less hitting = less injuries. Its not a surprise Keith and Kane never get hurt, but Toews gets banged up. The Hawks play a game centered around avoiding physical contact more than any team in the NHL, and I think the results in both health and wins speak for themselves. |

I like Ovechkin, more-so than Crosby (when it comes to that debate, and only because i dislike Crosby), but i dont know if he'll ever win anything. He's had very good teams and is never able to do anything with them |
