Is it just Kovalchuk vs Oshie...

I don't like that rule either. If you MUST have an effing SO, it should at least be a team rotation thing as it is in the NHL.

Kopecky also apparently got injured too. Slovenian player may have targeted his head...

Heard they were trying to talk to Slovenia about a trade for Kopitar with Zus + going the other way, but talks have stalled since this morning's bout between the two teams.

More to come...

I bet San Jose is really kicking themselves for that deal.

Wow, I actually feel for the Russians. It's gotta suck to lose that game based on an extended skills competition between four players. Thank God it wasn't us!

Great game, shltty ending. I don't do the "we" vs. "they" Olympic nationalist thing, and didn't really care which team won. But I'm happy for Kaner.

They'll probably get a bye still if they beat Slovakia in regulation, unless the Canada-Finland game goes to OT.

LOL. I'm more surprised Ovi didn't get a chance to light it up in the SO.

Different rule/wrinkle but a couple of Kovalchuk's moves were pretty slick. Didn't know Oshie was so good at shootout either but what was he like 4 for 6?

Would have been nice to have longer OT and different shooters in the so. May have missed an earlier post but they don't do shootout's in the medal round, do they? That would blow.

He's in Kane territory this year: 2 for 14.

Datsyuk / Kovalchuk - not bad choices.

Those two and Malkin were what I had expected. All dangerous choices to be sure.

As far as the 'Great 8' is concerned, did he do anything at all this game? I only noticed he was at the game when they showed the Russian bench on camera...

He had a shot at the end of the game from the outside that Quick still had to make a pretty nice save on but other than that, not much.

Copied and pasted from a NY Times article about Olympic hockey rules:

OVERTIME: During the preliminary round, tied games go to a four-on-four five-minute sudden-death overtime, as in the N.H.L. In the medal round until the gold medal game, overtime is played five on five for 10 minutes. In the gold medal game, the overtime is five on five for 20 minutes. In each case, if overtime does not break the tie, the game goes to a shootout.

True, but you know all those cliches about big-time players stepping up at big-time moments? I would've thought Alex the Great would've gotten a chance, that's all.

Totally agree.......... NO WAY should an Olympic hockey game be decided by a shootout. This is a TEAM Olympic's sport downgraded to a shootout between 2 or 3 players ??? Horrible Rule and should be abolished completely here and in the NHL.
4 on 4 until it's decided is the way to go at all time in the regular season......
5 on 5 in the playoffs as usual. Time to change to improve the sport.
TFB if it's too tiring or injuries occur........ make the sport better for the money we pay as fans for these games.

Its all about television and time allotted to complete a game - both at the Olympics and in the NHL.

I like what you say, but the argument that you can't reasonably expect the players to hold up to sudden death 4 on 4 over an entire 82 game grind is valid. So then we're back to square one again over what to do about that...

In the Olympics, a SO should have no place whatsoever. It's absurd.

Avoid overtimes by giving 3 points to a regulation win instead of 2. Then we would see more intensity at the end of games for teams that need that extra point........ as well as reward the teams that deserve it.
