That might be the first time I've heard "quality" and Scottie Upshall in reference to each other. He'll go on his 10 game pointless streak soon enough, have no fear. - AlexF
I picked up Brock Nelson only two weeks ago on the waiver, gonna be a good player. There are guys there occasionally. |

Who did you expect to be on waivers really though, It is like 400 player league or such......regardless of his pointless streaks and I am no fan of his... 40 points is still more then many players on peoples rosters are going to get. |

Agreed that there is very little on waivers now.
But there were lots of great players that got picked up early in the season.
Whether we drop bench spots or not, I do like the idea of every team dropping players in the offseason.
That should add some depth to the list.
Also, the draft isn't going to be a snake draft, so the lower teams will get the better picks every round...which helps a bit. - Fosco
The thing with having more bench spots is that you have to be more involved in setting your roster on a regular basis, and change your line-up/strategy accordingly throughout the match-up (depending on how you are doing in the various statistic categories).
I think it makes things more competitive and much more inter-active. If you have minimum bench spots, it minimizes this aspect, as you don't really have a lot of choice in terms of inserting certain types of players in your line up (i.e. based on mid-week standings, you might want to insert a guy that is primarily a penalty minute producer, or a player that is a hitting/blocking machine instead of a player whose soul contributions come from getting points). It just makes it that much more important to strategize as the week goes on.
Edit: additionally, there is more incentive and opportunity to make trades (even minor ones) |

Your welcome for dropping him

I agree.
But I also see where AlexF is coming from, having just joined the league and not having a team he picked. |

There are many players in the minors that could make an impact next year, Players will be dropped and early season waivers will have some gems regardless of the draft choices. - SMP8719
Yup.
But I don't see the harm in making a poll about every team dropping 2-3 players from their roster into the draft this offseason.
If it goes through you'll still have the opportunity to get them back, and the shakeup will make things a bit more interesting.
Also, overall there will be more available with only 18 teams.
I'm just waiting to see what the final tally is on the bench-spots poll.
A few people still have to vote. |

Yes, he's unfortunately behind the eight-ball, but hopefully he'll have a chance to pick up some quality players in the draft (especially given there is going to be a dispersal component which will allow a lot more players to be available). That said, I'm sure it's frustrating at this point to try and improve his team significantly. Hang in there Alex! (at least you know that Edler will be available soon! ) |

Hurts him more though because it would be impossible for him to add a high end player except this year because of the dropping of 2 teams.
If you drop rosters spots there won't be any value in mid level players any more or youth as there would be an abundance just sitting on waivers. So the only trades that would happen would involve just the high end guys making it harder to get one. Dropping spots only helps the teams with high, top end players. It also makes it much more of a risk adding youth that may or may not see regular time right away at the NHL level.
I am a regular poolie too and I have been in and am in, small pools... if all you wanna do is draft a team and change your roster once a month then lowering roster spots is the way to go. In my smaller pools there are almost no trades and very little roster changes... |

if you want to draft a player you have to drop one.... that makes it mandatory to drop players as is..............

I think everybody wants to make this pool fair and competitive for everyone, so I'm sure people are willing to accommodate the new managers a bit to do so.
Vantel also picked up a team he didn't draft, and possibly someone else (I can't remember). We also will need two new managers soon—I have to contact a few others who've asked.
There are some of us, myself included, who like the deep bench, but at the same time I'm totally willing to do an "expansion draft" and drop players players to aid the new teams, since I'll be able to still add new players to replace them, or even the same guys, if nobody else picks them up.
And if the majority want to lower the number of bench spots I'm fine with that too.
Another possibility would be to have a deadline or limit for waiver pickups, which would mean once you've reached it, the only way to add players is through trades.
Just a thought... |

I agree that's definitely a side effect. But I think keeping the league 18 teams strong will still keep it deep enough. |

I know, but if everyone has to drop say two or three players by a certain date before the draft it makes the draft a lot deeper and helps out the lower teams.
I've done it in other pools, and it keeps things interesting.
I'm comfortable enough with my depth that I'd be willing to do that.
Obviously, I'd put it up for a vote. |

I'm actually in another league like that with 10 waiver pick-ups allowed all season. I literally do nothing to that team but check occasionally to see how I'm doing. Sort of takes the fun out of it IMO. |

I missed last nights game, other then seeing us tank does Yann Sauve look like he is good enough to play in the NHL? Other wise why dont we have Weber in the line up instead?
And Seriously NO NHL trades today? |

I agree ... it is just another strategy that is available... using the waivers to add players as needed.... Lowering bench spots also takes out this strategy. |

Yeah, I was thinking more like 30 or so.
But yeah, I wasn't super keen on that idea. Just something that was proposed in another pool. |

Doesn't take it out, it reduces its reach and forces the manager to make a tougher decision. It's easy dropping players who've sucked for you for weeks. Less easy to drop those middling guys in pursuit of someone who might produce a bit more. |

I thought about that.
But then I'd have to give one to all the new managers, and I don't think that's fair to the other non-playoff teams. |

Teams don't want to eat the salary over the next couple weeks. There will also likely be a few injuries to players in the Olympics, as well as a number of players returning from injury after the break.
A lot of grey area to make trades before the break.
