maybe or maybe not...or just the player showed interest in the idea of sticking with the team. end of the day we dont know and to say now that it was obvious (not that you said that) that they wouldnt resign is just using hindsight. end of the day, i know you were happy with the vanek deal (unclear about smyth). we dk what was said, maybe vanek outright lied; nothing can be dismissed bc we just dont know.

also as for the major assets in the smyth deal, maybe the isles realized those coveted prospects blew nuts and wouldnt pan out and ryan smyth was the best return they could get...in that case it was a great deal regardless of if smyth resigned or not.

- LetsGoIsles

I liked both deals at face value. Both were bold and brought in known elite players. What I don't like is the little things that management should vet a player on appear to have been missed out on.

As for the assets, I don't necessarily disagree with the idea that perhaps Snow didn't like O'Mara considering O'Mara wasn't even his pick but he dealt a couple of prospects and a 1st rounder, so it wasn't cheap for a rental. I'm pretty sure that if he knew Smyth would bolt, he wouldn't have made that deal. I just wonder if more could have been done to reach that conclusion.

He is going to Sochi so why would teams want to pay him more money by trading for him now when he can get hurt over there as well? Teams will offer more at the deadline and the money will be less so they will not be getting teams best offers now. It's not an issue with most if it not all the players I would guess. They know this is the guys one shot at UFA and he has to think about what is best for him and his family because one day most of these guys will be in the same position he is now

I wanted Vanek signed but in reality is he the forward that can grow with JT? I don't think so because he has about 3 maybe 4 good years left in him where at that time JT will just be entering his prime. Only problem is its gonna cost a fortune to get one of those young guys to grow with him.

We should have never let go of Schremp...

Fans are upset because the team took a step back and this just adds insult to injury. The Vanek issue on it's own is a bad result for the team but it's magnified by our place in the standings.
- keaner17

Seeing guys like Vanek wanting to leave even with a great player like JT on the team does not help. You figure all the prospects and being in Brooklyn in a year, these things should no longer be happening.

Even if he turned that down.. he isnt going to sign a contract like that untill he sees what the places/place he really wants to be offers him... at the end of the day that contract may be the biggest thing he is ever offered... but the guy needs to see if his dream contract is a reality and the only way that happens is as a free agent.

I have no idea what he is going to get from where, but he and his agent feel that as a free agent he will be able to write his own ticket, seeing the contracts that have been handed out to players less star studded & less established the last few years... yes he can get a contract for more then 9 a season.

Here's why I'm willing to bet he won't. Buffalo reportedly offered Vanek a contract comparable with Alex Ovechkins. In other words they offered to make him the highest paid forward in the league. He turned it down. He 'loved the area' and had lived there for 9 years, but decided that being given the best contract in the game wasn't enough. Why?
It's one of only two things:
A. He wants to go to a team that will be a contender. Likely one that can offer more in terms of success but inevitably less in terms of money.
B. His heart is set on Minnesota, a club that will offer him less due to preexisting contracts and hometown discount stuff.

So under either scenario, he's unlikely to make more elsewhere.

Maybe a good rule of thumb has to be, if the other team will not let you talk to the player and the player will not put you over the top, do not make the deal.

might be his Wife's heart... I actually am hoping that is where he is traded to and he hates it after being in NY. Everyone said he and the wife have been in city, shows, resaurants..etc.

I agree with everything you just wrote... But I also think there is the "someone will offer me more" scenario playing out in his head too. Come July 1st if Minn is only offering him a 4 year deal worth 20 million, The Pens are offering 4 years at 24 & Buffalo & NY are offering contracts like Ovie's... He is going to have to decide on Home/ possible Cup / or Cash... but he NEEDS to see all his options in front of him.

Here's the other little nasty truth that I think most of us can agree on. As good as Vanek is, he's not worth anything close to 7 years $62 million. He's a damn fine player with great skill and reportedly a good guy, but I just don't see that price going with his overall game. That said, he IS worth that to us, since we can't seem to get anyone else to give us a look. So when it comes to free agency time, I think he might be surprised at just how low some of the offers are.

I get what you're saying in that there's always a team that springs up with stupid money, but in this case...I think we're that team

It also leads me to believe, his choice is completely about location and Minnesota is his dream. In the even it falls through, we'll see just how truthful his positive comments were about this team really were

agreed with this...vanek is not a 62 million player.

he is on the islanders...he would bring credibility and that is worth the difference to his actual worth.
