He almost got hurt last night.. and I would think having him in the locker room after turning down a Max offer would be a bit of an Issue.. no? obviously the isles don't care about the fans. - niteislander
I do agree that having him around can't help matters at this point, but the team is pretty aware at the point that their season is toast. That said, if anything, I'd rather give him limited minutes on 3rd line. Let JT build some familiarity with another linemate as opposed to having him play with a ghost. |

Like most Isles trade deadlines. - ses111
1) not the trade deadline
2) so far isles are tied for most trades made during this break... |

It's an interesting thing. Back when it was Milbury screwing this franchise up, we heard "Mike Must Go" at the Coliseum on a regular basis. I have YET to hear ONE "Snow Must Go" chant. Has this fanbase simply given up since the news of them moving to Brooklyn broke? Another reason? Listen, I know we've been beaten down into the ground repeatedly since 94, so i don't blame people for giving up, but the ones that are still going to the games should be angry and chanting. Gotta vent SOMEhow.

because.. well he doesn't need to go anywhere... well maybe the Draft.. but that's it

It's one of the deadlines. If there is no good deal now than they should not make it now. For some reason, I was thinking more of the deadline when they did not move PAP. No idea how you keep up the strenght to defend this team? |

correct...i was saying the smyth deal is different than vanek; vanek was given more time to adjust to LI and the organization; not to mention it was 7 years ago.
also 7 years ago, the team direction were very different-- in 2005 they were about to gut the team and had nothing but bottom 5 finishes promised. (hold the laughter but) for a UFA signing from here on out, the outlook is much different. - LetsGoIsles
I don't think things were quite that gloomy at the time with Smyth. The Isles had made the playoffs three consecutive seasons prior to the lockout and then missed Milbury's last season after the lockout. So it was 2006-07 that the Isles traded for Smyth and went to the playoffs. The plan at that point was to keep Yashin and the rest of the team around and make Smyth their posterboy, but he chose to get out and take less money elsewhere. The major point being, he never really planned to stay at all. He didn't want to come here in the first place. In the case of Vanek, he didn't want to play here either as he clearly has one or two teams on his mind. Both situations represent the teams failure to gauge the players interest in signing on prior to spending major assets. |

rumors say it was far more than that. First Galloff advised 7 $49mil wasn't close to the offer...then rumored that 7 years $62mil |

He is going to Sochi so why would teams want to pay him more money by trading for him now when he can get hurt over there as well? Teams will offer more at the deadline and the money will be less so they will not be getting teams best offers now. It's not an issue with most if it not all the players I would guess. They know this is the guys one shot at UFA and he has to think about what is best for him and his family because one day most of these guys will be in the same position he is now |

facts are the deadline (IE last time to make a deal is march 5) AND they have made a deal. there hasnt been much activity today/yesterday.

You think he's going to get more than 7 years $62 million? I have my doubts. First off, if MN get's him, it will be a hometown discount. I have a hard time seeing him get more than $9 million a season. |

In the perfect world, Smyth and Vanek are more suited for teams looking for that part to push them towards a Cup. Vanek and Smyth were not the best fits for the Isles and were very risky. Hopefully they can do ok with a Vanek trade and have a good offseason. It will not be easy and it is easy to understand why fans are upset. |

maybe or maybe not...or just the player showed interest in the idea of sticking with the team. end of the day we dont know and to say now that it was obvious (not that you said that) that they wouldnt resign is just using hindsight. end of the day, i know you were happy with the vanek deal (unclear about smyth). we dk what was said, maybe vanek outright lied; nothing can be dismissed bc we just dont know.
also as for the major assets in the smyth deal, maybe the isles realized those coveted prospects blew nuts and wouldnt pan out and ryan smyth was the best return they could get...in that case it was a great deal regardless of if smyth resigned or not. |

Fans are upset because the team took a step back and this just adds insult to injury. The Vanek issue on it's own is a bad result for the team but it's magnified by our place in the standings. |

I wanted Vanek signed but in reality is he the forward that can grow with JT? I don't think so because he has about 3 maybe 4 good years left in him where at that time JT will just be entering his prime. Only problem is its gonna cost a fortune to get one of those young guys to grow with him. |

I have no idea what he is going to get from where, but he and his agent feel that as a free agent he will be able to write his own ticket, seeing the contracts that have been handed out to players less star studded & less established the last few years... yes he can get a contract for more then 9 a season.
