Considering how good the Canucks have been since Gillis got here I'm still constantly amazed by how badly the fans slam him. They act like it's so easy to make trades, that injuries shouldn't matter, and that without the benefit of 3 years hindsight he still should have known what nobody else knew about prospects and potential draft picks.
The Canucks lack depth this season after the cap went down. You know who else lacks depth this season? Everyone!
The Blackhawks have a huge hole at 2C. The Blues are relying on Canucks castoff Derek Roy (their goaltending hasn't really instilled much confidence either). The mighty Kings have bigger scoring problems than the Canucks. The Sharks have remained consistently inconsistent. Does anyone really trust Hiller? The Coyotes can't keep the puck out of their own net. The Wild are a mess. The Avs are playing well, but they were last place last year! And Edmonton and Calgary are just so bad they make me want to puke.
It isn't all roses in Canucksland, but it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. 29 teams won't win the Stanley Cup this year. Gillis made some solid moves this past year. Let's see what he does before the trade deadline and then again at the draft. |

Seriously, imagine if Gillis offered Backes a bit more on that offer sheet and St.Louis let him go? I hate that (frank)er, but he would have been an amazing addition. - Nucker101
Imagine if Pat Quinn hadn't matched for Kesler or Ohlund, or if the Sedin's had gone to FA instead of resigning with Gillis, or if Gillis had signed the Hoff to a 10 year $40m contract, or Salo to a 3 year $10m contract or Ohlund to a whateverthehelltampapaidhimtoomuchcontract. |

Chicago had to suck for a long time brutha.....
So 2 out of 30 teams, sounds full proof.....
We also have horvat and shinkaruk coming up......when gillis took over we didn't even have that......his focus has to be more draft oriented now. Before he had to make a push when we nada cup contending team which meant giving up picks........you can't really have it both ways....... - chompsey
He needs to put more emphasis on drafting given the current state of our core group, that's for sure. |

Desperation may be a poor choice of words but you get what I mean? A good young up and coming player means you can trade a good aging player, like Burrows, for picks and prospects. Keeps the system replenishing itself, we're not seeing that. - LeftCoaster
We are starting to see the prospect group build. |

The funny thing is, is that was one of the areas that he highlighted coming into the job. Because drafting and development had nothing to do with the salary cap, and FA agreed to spend whatever it took to bring a championship to Vancouver, Gillis promised that this would be better. |

I think he's done a respectable job with the core he inherited, where I wish he'd improve is our system of players coming up. I know he's been trying to win a Cup, almost did. That said, we have a large gap between our high end (2) prospects and our current core of players in the Sedins. |

Ideally in a "retool" phase you target young players that have shown flashes/ability at the NHL level and just need to work on strength/conditioning/defense/consistency..things that can be developed and taught and coached up.
So Barkov, Trouba and who for our trade? - Nucker101

I think it was difficult for him to improve that right away. He's now been the GM for long enough that he can look at which scout's recommendation/rankings have been good and who's have sucked. He should now know who to trust and who's had a spotty track record. |
