It's amazing how we all sit here and pick apart decisions 5 years after the fact without having ANY insight to what these players were thought of at the time. Some of these teams unearthed some gems but I assure other GM's swung and missed just as bad......it's not a science people....

Hindsight is always easiest to pick things apart but the truth is they haven't done a great job and now we're seeing the results of it. I don't give a (frank) if you agree or disagree, it's the truth.

Yup - the stronger your system is the less likely you grow into an old aging team. Other teams that are having more success than we are have better systems with just as poopty draft positions.

Last year, for whatever reason, they seemed to approach the draft with a bit of a different perspective. I think they hired a new guy out of Detroit's system?
- LeftCoaster

Gillis seems to approach every draft a little differently. Didn't he take all those overaged guys the year before?

Which players that Gillis has resigned has he done so out of desperation? Who's he given more money than they deserve?
- KB3Point0

Desperation may be a poor choice of words but you get what I mean? A good young up and coming player means you can trade a good aging player, like Burrows, for picks and prospects. Keeps the system replenishing itself, we're not seeing that.

I'd taken a proven player any day over picks and prospects when the window is open, otherwise you have the oilers, islanders, sabers, panthers etc.....teams with a lot of prospects and ZERO success.....

Ideally in a "retool" phase you target young players that have shown flashes/ability at the NHL level and just need to work on strength/conditioning/defense/consistency..things that can be developed and taught and coached up.

So Barkov, Trouba and who for our trade?

Yeah, agree, that's what is supposed to separate a guy who is going to be your franchises GM from a guy who is not (the 5 year strategy). I don't think Gillis is all evil, as some, but all we have is hindsight as we're not part of the "process".

Boston and Chicago.

Boston was so deep at center, from drafting Krejci and Bergeron plus they had Savard at the time, that they could afford to trade a great young player like Kessel to get Hamilton and Segiun.

Chicago won two Cups yet they've still got some young players they've recently drafted on their team. Plus they've got Teravainen who's one of the best junior prospects in the world. We've got Jordan Schroeder. Granted guys like Tanev have come up thru the college free agent route.

Yeah let's be real, I bet almost every Canuck fan has agreed with some of MG's ad moves when he made him and disagreed with some of his good ones when they were made. Easy to be a hindsight armchair GM. Plus we can only speculate about the many trade negotiations, player inquiries, contract negotiations and free agent offers he's made that did not go through. Its why I love hearing former GM's talk about how certain trades/signings/drafts played out.

no one is implying we've got the worst management in the game, it's a (frank)in discussion board, we're discussing where we could improve.

Chicago had to suck for a long time brutha.....

So 2 out of 30 teams, sounds full proof.....

We also have horvat and shinkaruk coming up......when gillis took over we didn't even have that......his focus has to be more draft oriented now. Before he had to make a push when we nada cup contending team which meant giving up picks........you can't really have it both ways.......

The only things I truly believe that Gillis F*ucked up are the timing of the Hodgson trade (off season) and the Luongo debacle. That, and to just keep his big mouth shut instead of commenting on players on their way out. Just be the bigger man no matter how much the media eggs you on.

On his player personnel, I believe he did what he felt was right at the time and I can't fault him on that, even if it turned out not to be the right move. As Chompsy notes, plenty of other GM's have made just as many mistakes...

Seriously, imagine if Gillis offered Backes a bit more on that offer sheet and St.Louis let him go? I hate that (frank)er, but he would have been an amazing addition.

Agreed with all of this. I'd say keeping Ballard(not even trying to waive him) and letting Ehrhoff walk instead was also a big problem. He never really replaced the Torres role either. I think he underestimated the roles each of them played, they brought a skill set to the team that no else on the roster has.

He seems pretty stubborn when it comes to admitting his mistakes, the best GM's in pro sports are quick to admit they've made a mistake on a certain player and try to act quickly to cut ties and look elsewhere.
