We have 1/3 of the Swiss D!!!!
Whatever, we need the help on the back end. This move leads me to believe we will be trading a Dman in the near future. - golfingsince
I'll shed a tear if it's Tanev. |

Not as cut and dried as that, though.
I see what you're saying, but you also have to aknowledge what a huge risk that would have been considering he traded another established young NHLer for another complete question mark with the Horvat/Schneider deal.
Not to mention the message that sends to MG's bosses about the current state of the team—I don't necessarily agree with the motivation, but I understand that Gillis has to try to ice a competitive NHL roster, and at the time there were no established NHL roster players in the deal.
And as Nucker mentioned Nyquist and Tatar's values have risen since then—Tatar could have continued to be nothing more than a fringe NHLer, and Nyquist could have fulfilled the concerns about him not being big and physical enough to handle the NHL.
It was a risky deal, and we still don't know all the details. Guy's obviously gun shy because of previous deals, including Horvat/Schneider.
A GM can't just make a move like that based on foresight—he has to balance the future of the club with the present, and also consider his job security. - Fosco
It would have been a risky deal, but I think it would have fit Gillis MO for the past couple of moves he had made. He traded both Hodgson and Schneider, (established NHL players) for a prospect and a pick. It would of made sense to pick up more young prospects like Tatar and Nyquist and start looking at forming a future core with Horvat, Shinkuruk and Kassian.
But you are right. If those players didn't work out he is in a tough spot.
It would have been a "bold move". |

I disagree. I think Diaz is a stop gap right now for all the injuries we have. He is UFA at the end of the year and Gillis can let him walk if he wants. At the end of the day all it cost was Wiese, who Gillis has been shopping for a couple of months now. I don't think this will have much impact on the next move (assuming there is one) |

I say the Canucks package Diaz up with another asset be it a player prospect or pick and use that to bring in a top 6 forward. Then call up Corrado |

Yeah It will be Edler or Tanev(depending how much of a raise he wants) |

Diaz has 100 blocked shots in 44 games this year, probably another reason why he was acquired. |

Don't over evaluate Diaz. Put it this way, Bergevin has been known to be shopping Diaz for about 2-3 weeks and this is the best offer he got for the guy.
Shows you what other GM's in the league think of him.
He is an NHLer, just a bottom 6 type of guy with 10 mins a game |

Doubt that he gets moved. I think either Tanev or Bieksa could have a pretty serious injury or a d-man is on the move. |

Both 5'11, both struggle to contain forwards down low and both make poor reads. If this is in the cards then it will spell disaster for the Canucks. |

Similar story with Weise, Bobby Mac said the Canucks emailed the league awhile back saying Weise was available which we all found to be pretty funny. |

Exactly. We dealt 5 nickels and got a quarter.
Canucks needed this sort of deal because of injuries, on a Montreal stand point it doesn't make sense yet unless there is something else happening because we already have too many 4th liners |

it don't matter what other GM's think. As long as Gillis thinks he is a stud.
In Gillis we trust. |

I am personally glad he is gone from Montreal because for Habs fans it's time to see what Beaulieu, Tinordi, Pateryn can do. |

I think the risk factor in the Schneider deal was infinitely lessened by the fact that Luongo was waiting in the wings to reclaim the start spot. MG knew that he had that cushion when he made the trade, so again I never envisioned that trade as having a high element of risk to either the team's performance this season nor Gillis' job.
And I hate to say this man but there are so many deals/players that I have advocated for Van getting publicly on this site where the player ended up making good somewhere else that it's really got my opinion of what game Gillis is viewing at the low threshold that it is today. Am I lucky that often? I'm not a hockey guru and this is not my career, but just a little bit of insight goes a long way in player assessment and team needs.
I do get your points but I also expect more from a GM in a hockey healthy market. Gillis was a bit of a goon as a player. It often appears he reads the game with the same level of astuteness as a GM. |

Wanna trade us some of your 4th liners? We don't have enough.
Serious note. What would it take to get Prust? |

I feel the same way. Weise's roster spot can now be used by Archibald or Grienier. |

Torts opinion of the way the Canucks have been playing says a lot about Sullivan's inability to be a head coach! Maybe Gully as 2nd in command is a better option.
I hope there's more trades to come, but I won't be holding my breath. |
