Yeah, I'd much rather see a guy like Archibald get another few games this year to see if he has what it takes.

The prospect pool in Utica isn't deep, but it would be nice to see what we have...

This deal has Moneypuck Gillis written all over it. Wei seis a terrible puck possession player(talk about his goals all you want, but shooting percentage is flukey and will go back down and he'll resume producing like an AHL player). I kn ow it's just a depth move, but it's hard not to love this deal because....

-Diaz is a top 4 d-man in Montreal, possession wise. Last year he was pretty bad possession-wise though.

-Diaz has the lowest even strength goals against per 60 minutes played at ES this year on Montreal..by a decent margin. He was also at the lowest for Montreal last year as well.

He seems like a pretty solid bottom pairing dman when I look at the numbers.

Montreal's trying to add a little truculence after Gallagher's manhandling yesterday.

Grenier would be an interesting call up.

They traded for the wrong guy then...Sestito fills that role perfectly. Weise isn't a heavyweight fighter and not good enough for a regular shift in the playoffs.

Diaz is pretty soft apparently, but when this team's healthy, he's the #7 guy here.

Yeah, but Wiese won the fastest skater competition in the Canucks skill competition.

I'd prefer Grenier to get called up first be honest. Better numbers and even bigger body(not physical, but still).

I would like to see Grenier on the 4th line. Considering how useless and injured the top 6 is I wouldn't mind Jensen getting a look just to see how he does.

Funny how much different the Habs fans at HB are reacting compared to some at HF. Some fans there really hate this deal and are pissed are Bergevin. You also can't dislike the fact that he rarely seems so get scored on when on the ice..not bad for a soft guy.

New #Habs F Weise apparently butted heads more than once with #Canucks Torts; Vancouver wanted lots of grit that wasn't always delivered.

Torts was right, too many nights for him when he wasn't noticeable for a guy with limited ability.

A scouting report on Diaz:

Assets: Is a smooth skater with puck poise and some offensive acumen. Moves the puck efficiently most of the time. Doesn't make a lot of mistakes when he has the puck.

Flaws: Lacks size and strength, so he can get knocked off the puck with relative frequency. Needs to be more assertive when on the ice, both on offense and defense.

Career Potential: Smooth, yet fragile puck-moving defenseman.

I just wonder how he will match up against big teams in the west like LA, SJ St.L ect? With the injury bug going through Vancouver, being described as fragile is concerning.

We have 1/3 of the Swiss D!!!!

Whatever, we need the help on the back end. This move leads me to believe we will be trading a Dman in the near future.

Gillis would have gotten ripped even more if he'd traded BOTH Schneider and Edler for entirely futures within a span of a week—all small Fs and all had question marks about their NHL viability.

That would have been throwing in the towel for this season before it even began.

Wouldn't look good on MG to the Aquilini's—his motivations aren't exactly the same as the fans'.

In hindsight, there isn't much hope for this season now, and Nyquist looks to be heading in the right direction, but I can see why Gillis thought it was too much of a risk it the time.

He stuck to his price...

If a GM only does what is the blatantly obvious move every time he'll not go very far towards improving his team. Neither will any senior manager at any company in any industry. A bit of of foresight and vision is not a nice to have but a requirement at that level.

Sounds a lot like Letang, just wasn't used right in Montreal. Diaz will turn the Canucks power play around, and make us a cup contender again.

Gillis has already reserved a seat for him at the awards ceremony. This kid has already has the Norris locked up and he hasn't even hit the ice yet.

Not as cut and dried as that, though.

I see what you're saying, but you also have to aknowledge what a huge risk that would have been considering he traded another established young NHLer for another complete question mark with the Horvat/Schneider deal.

Not to mention the message that sends to MG's bosses about the current state of the team—I don't necessarily agree with the motivation, but I understand that Gillis has to try to ice a competitive NHL roster, and at the time there were no established NHL roster players in the deal.

And as Nucker mentioned Nyquist and Tatar's values have risen since then—Tatar could have continued to be nothing more than a fringe NHLer, and Nyquist could have fulfilled the concerns about him not being big and physical enough to handle the NHL.

It was a risky deal, and we still don't know all the details. Guy's obviously gun shy because of previous deals, including Horvat/Schneider.

A GM can't just make a move like that based on foresight—he has to balance the future of the club with the present, and also consider his job security.

I hope they pair Diaz with Edler.
