Tatar, Nyquist and Smith. - fiveandagame
I don't see a situation where you can get both of Nyuist AND Tatar. One of the two with Smith (or someone else) and a high pick (depending upon who the second asset is). |

Due to his massive potential he will be skipping the NHL entirely so he can prepare for the 2018 Olympics.
Hockey Canada does not wish to lose him to injury. - Whiskey-Tango

That's a surprisingly good move for Vancouver.
I'm glad to see Montreal getting ripped off... but I wish it was another team doing it. |

Traded Weise for a puck moving Olympian - Whiskey-Tango
interesting that they are saying Dmen are in the most demand this trade deadline. and funny Canucks have the most Dmen that they can move if they want to get a top 6 forward.
and it helps that he is an Olympian! |

Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks Game Day: Feb. 3 at Detroit; Torts Returns, Weise traded
The Vancouver Canucks have brought in some blue line help in the form of defenseman Raphael Diaz as coach John Tortorella returns from his suspension and the team prepares to face the Detroit Red Wings on Monday at Joe Louis arena. - Carol Schram
This deal has Moneypuck Gillis written all over it. Wei seis a terrible puck possession player(talk about his goals all you want, but shooting percentage is flukey and will go back down and he'll resume producing like an AHL player). I kn ow it's just a depth move, but it's hard not to love this deal because....
-Diaz is a top 4 d-man in Montreal, possession wise. Last year he was pretty bad possession-wise though.
-Diaz has the lowest even strength goals against per 60 minutes played at ES this year on Montreal..by a decent margin. He was also at the lowest for Montreal last year as well.
He seems like a pretty solid bottom pairing dman when I look at the numbers. |

Yeah, when I got a text about the trade from a fiend I assumed a pick(or one of the Frenchie prospects) was also going to Montreal. |

Yeah, this was a good old fashioned hockey trade. The only problem is it was a 13th forward for a 7th defenceman.
I still like it. Get Wiese off the books and give his spot to someone like Archibald all while improving the depth of back end. All in all a good move. - fiveandagame
you added salary in this deal... |

Meh, I doubt Gillis is looking to add a Vanek/Moulson/Cammy. |

Agreed. I won't get into it again but I was really upset when I heard that was the deal on the table. - AlexF
Gillis would have gotten ripped even more if he'd traded BOTH Schneider and Edler for entirely futures within a span of a week—all small Fs and all had question marks about their NHL viability.
That would have been throwing in the towel for this season before it even began.
Wouldn't look good on MG to the Aquilini's—his motivations aren't exactly the same as the fans'.
In hindsight, there isn't much hope for this season now, and Nyquist looks to be heading in the right direction, but I can see why Gillis thought it was too much of a risk it the time.
He stuck to his price... |

Yeah, since the draft both Tatar's and Nyquist's value have gone up and it's safe to say that Edler's may have taken a slight hit. |

I should have said off the roster. He is a wasted roster space. There are better options available like Archibald. |

Weise is an AHL player on the Hawks/Blues/Ducks/Kings/Etc. He's not good enough as a regular for a team looking to win it all. Unless you have him playing with some very good 4th liners that can make him look good. |

Yeah, I'd much rather see a guy like Archibald get another few games this year to see if he has what it takes. |
