i would've won my pool if the seahawks kicked a field goal at the end of the game instead of letting the backup QB have a chance on 4th and 7 |

The Sabres are believed to be willing to give Callahan seven-years and $42 million along with their captaincy when/if Callahan becomes a free agent. (NY Post)
gotta love the sabres purposely leaking information to basically negotiate with cally without being given strict permission. |

Can you explain this or break it down? Guys like Boyle, Moore, Carcillo and possibly Pouliot won't be coming back, that's what a good farm system affords you, Girardi is close, Stralman we'll have to wait and see and Kreider, Brass, J.Moore and Zucc will get appropriate raises, the money is there especially with Richards still a strong buyout candidate, they'll have $29 million in cap space if the cap does go up to $71 million, and that's before Richards being bought out - cranford93
I like that dreamy part about how great the Ranger farm system is right now. You can see how many are coming up and making an impact.
Alright, you need 14 forwards. You have the following under contract next season:
Nash - $7.800
Richie - $6.667
Step - $3.075
Hags - $2.250
Dorsett - $1.633
That's $21.425 with 9 forwards left
You need 7 defensemen. You have the following under contract next season:
McD - $4.700
Staal - $3.975
Klein - $2.900
That's $11.575 with 4 defensemen left.
You need 2 goalies. Both are under contract next season:
Henrik - $6.875
Cam - $0.562.
Total = $7.437
And that's 10 players under contract for $40.437, leaving you about $30 for the remaining 13 players. That's $2.3 each.
UFAs:
Cally - wants and will get $6.000 or will be gone
Girardi - wants and will get $5.500
Boyle - makes $1.700, barely more than your vaunted farm replacement.
Pouliot - makes $1.300, barely more than your vaunted farm replacement.
D. Moore - makes $1.000, barely more than your vaunted farm replacement.
Carcillo - makes $0.825, the same as your vaunted farm replacement.
Stralman - makes $1.700
Total UFAs = $18.025
RFAs:
Brassard - making $3.200
Zucc - $3.500 by some miracle
Kreider - making $1.325 this year
Falk - making $0.975
J. Moore - making $0.840
Total RFAs = $9.84
That's $28 million of your $30 million, and we haven't given raises to Boyle, Pouliot, either Moore, Carcillo, Stralman, Brassard, Kreider, or Falk.
So you buy Richie out and give those raises. Awesome! Now where did that top 6 forward go? And if you think those guys in Hartford are going to make your team a contender, more power to you. But I don't think the Garden faithful will have any patience for that. Call me crazy, but I think Slats has muffed the cap. And I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

i don't think he muffed the cap because everyone is getting paid what they deserve.
if it comes down to richards being bought out, JT miller will take his top 9 spot. not a better player, but he's going to be good and has earned a legitimate chance. |

I wish this Duck fan would post during the day instead of the middle of the night all the time.
Although he is wrong, Lundqvist's cap hit jumps to 8.5 million next year.
But our top two players are Lundqvist and Nash, they will combine for a 16.3 million hit.
How many other teams in the league will have their top two players locked into money like that? The Ducks do with Getzlaf and Perry, the Penguins have three guys locked into about 25 million with Crosby, Malkin and Letang.
It's all how in you fill in the players around them and the Rangers will have some tough decisions to make like any other team will.

I don't know about you guys but I am on the fence when it comes to the Olympics. The tournament is great, the best against the best so I understand why its important for teh game itself. From a Rangers POV, each of the last three Olympic breaks, key Ranger players weren't the same when they came back and in my opinion it hurt them down the stretch. This season the Rangers have been a top team in the league for the final month heading into the break, not liking the breaking of the momentum.... |

I am definitely on the other side of the fence when it comes to the Olympics. I hate the season being stopped for this, the time zone difference is so drastic that the games will be on at 7am. None of it appeals to me.

but to watch Russia self destruct and lose to either Canada or the States on their home soil does appeal to me.
To see Ovechkin pouting after not medalling would make my year |

Man o man has Sather really backed himself into a corner with the Callahan business. Reading Larry Brooks this morning, it's almost become a no win for the Rangers. Teams are not making serious offers because they know if they truly want Callahan, they will just wait till summer and try to sign him. I guess they can always use the "we've decided to wait till the NHL trade deadline", if Slats can't broker a suitable deal by Friday. But, then he risks Callahan going to Sochi and chipping a tooth, or worse be injured in an NHL game between now and the deadline. I guess for Cally the worse that could happen is Sather takes a low ball deal this week and off he goes. If happens a lot of people are not going to be happy. |

I know Russia has had some team chemistry issues but I can't see the Russians folding up at home. You will never see a group of Russian hockey players try harder shift after shift than these next couple of weeks. It may leave their NHL coaches wondering why some take shifts off now and again... |

As well as Varly has played this season, and all signs are pointing to him as the starter for them, It all comes down to him and that Defence. Sure he will save 42 in a 4-3 win.
Team Russia might overcome and win a run and gun match up but in a defensive lock down type game, they will fold against better defensive goalie combos in Canada, Sweden, and the US. |

No matter how you slice it, Callahan has the leverage, Slats thinking here is correct, if he is serious about trading him then he has to exhaust every avenue possible to get the highest possible return. Problem is he cast a lure into a puddle in Central Park. He knows that, so its going to come down to him giving in somewhat which means they are getting less than the value than Callahan will get on the open market in a trade. Obviously they aren't getting a player back that plays like a $42 million star. Thats the way it goes, I want Callahan here and wish they'd re-sign him, but Ive resigned myself to the fact that he is no longer going to be here. Slats held the cards in previous negotiations, now the player does. Its the nature of the beast. |

Its harder to shut a team like that down on the larger ice surface and the international game is all about pace, they call all kinds of penalties and there is more room. The size of the playing surface cannot be underestimated |

yeah they were just talkin gabout that on TSN on the weekend, breaking it down to Goalies and Defensive positioning being the biggest adjustement for teams if they plan on winning.
Goalies angles are different, since the blue line is closer to the goal by 4 feet, and there is 2 extra feet behind the net, so point shots are 6 feet closer than they actually are in the NHL. Covering point shots and dmen clearing out shooting lanes are different from their normal assignments as well for the forwards and d in their own end.
They gave the edge to Hank for being the most experienced with these angles and shoudl be the tournaments best goalie bc of it. |

Hockey is the only in which the playing surface is significantly different from continent to continent, its a different game and can understand why Russian stars don't really like the NHL game, and I can't blame them. The Swedes, Czechs and Slovaks seem to adjust their game much better than the Russians... |
