My point was when the playoffs begin you can throw the regular season stats out the window. The game changes, it's much more of dump and grind hockey, as we have all seen, many playoff hero's have come from the 3ed and 4th lines. - OLDSCHOOL#6
I agree, but in all fairness, Callahan hasn't been a playoff hero yet either. Not saying he can't be, but the Rangers paid a lot of money to Chris Drury for his playoff bonafides as well. But, when the body and skill start to go, it's harder to be clutch. |

Players like Zuccarello can get you the playoffs. Players like Callahan can win you Stanley cups.
If of the matter is, Sather owes Cally a million just for scoring that goal in Carolina last year that put them in playoffs. Just think of narrative if they didn't make it - OLDSCHOOL#6
Come on, that was a bad goal allowed by Carolina's goalie more than a snipe by Callahan.
Players like Zuccarello are not as easy to find as players like Callahan. Zuccarello has finally been given a real chance, to show what he can do, and he is doing it big.
Callahan is a good player but let's not rewrite history about him either. He is a good player but nowhere near a great player. |

Yea I don't see much of a difference in 7 years if you are willing to go 6. It comes down to the cap hit. - TPC
I have no problem with 7 years if it lowers the cap hit. And I am definitely talking 5 million a year range.
7 years 35 million is enough for everything he provides. It could be front loaded somewhat in the first several years. |

I think that would be a very fair deal. He can definitely get more, but that is kind of what I would pay. I would give the greater term for a lower hit. |

so clearly, you are advocating giving Callahan anything he wants for as long as he wants, he should get it because they are just going to waste the money somewhere else - jimbro83
I didn't set a deadline of 3pm Friday to sign or trade him. And while I'm at it, why wasn't Slats concerned about giving Hank an 8 year deal a few weeks before he goes to Sochi? What if he blows out his knee making a save, and misses the rest of season? By establishing this window, Sather has blown it once again. Teams are not stupid, they know he's backed himself into a corner, they won't offer much. they know if they want they can sign him in July. |

Callahan is not a player who can take over a game on his own. That's absurdly obvious.
He needs players around him to succeed, which means taking a contract with a cap hit that enables the team to put a good team alongside him.

Because Lundqvist is the franchise. He is, that's the fact jack.
He got whatever he wanted and deservedly so.

But, if you think he is worth $6 million now and are really willing to invest that sort of cap space in him for several years, are you really going to let him walk because you are worried about him sucking in 2021? I am actually worried about the annual hit almost just as much as I am worried about the term, if not more. - Pete V
Idk. It's obviously hard for me to be like, "(frank) off Callahan, you're not worth it." With cap going up every year I'm not to worried about the cap. The term is crucial. Drury went south at 33? Gomez at 30. So how long can Callahan keep playing like he is without crippling himself? |

It's like salary slotting in the NFL. The QB is going to get paid more than the offensive guard. A tackle will get paid more than the guard for that matter. Cally is a second line right winger with significant intangibles, but if you overpay for that type of player you throw of the teams salary structure. |

9 goals and 21 points in about 40 games is a little alarming |

The difference is Callahan can adversely effect the future of the team with only a minor injury at the Olympics. Even if he pulls a hammy and is out three weeks with it, it kills his rental value. They wouldn't be able to trade him and then could lose him for nothing. |

It was odd to me, cause he has always been a strong scorer on the powerplay. Other than 5 on 3's, he doesn't sniff it. |

Understood.
I'm very glad this saga will apparently end this week, as it is I'm very sure causing a lot of angst in the room. |

The way I see it, if you are trying to avoid injury in the Olympics....don't you have to sit him these next 3 as well? |

He's not playing well enough to be on it. Not gonna break up the Brassard line. Also, where does he fit on the other unit with Richards, Nash, Stepan and Kreider. |

They are trying to get this resolved before the Avs game on Tuesday. The hard deadline is the Olympic break roster freeze but you have to think the Rangers want this resolved before Tuesday. |

Av has diminished his role, he certainly hasn't done him any favors. |

because a lot of people were speculating his play in the early months of the season was affected by the contract talks.
This isn't about Lundqvist though. Not sure why you are making it out to be.

So Pouliot is a better player than Callahan? |

Kind of have a feeling he is going to re-sign this week. If he really want to be here, and he is faced with a crap or get off the pot situation, I think he may tell his agent to get the best deal done. That is what I think is going to happen, although I realize I'm in the minority. |

Recently? Yes. I that's pretty tough for me to admit. I fully Believe Pouliot is just french for Zherdev. He's has great skill, an wacky mindset and a fluctuating work ethic. |

I'm not, my sense is we are experiencing the "Robbie Cano" syndrome. Yankees didn't want him back because they didn't want him to be he face of th franchise going forward. We have the same situation here, the organization doesn't want him, so they make a spectacle of his negotiation, so people like you can jump up and down in place and shout how he's not worth the money he's supposed to be asking for. |
