Who the hell knows? These numbers being floated are just crazy. And if they are to be believed, he needs to go. Because nothing says leadership like crippling your teams cap structure and adversely effecting their long term ability to win so you can be crazy, filthy rich, rather than just filthy rich. If this stuff ain't true, Cally better tell his agent to put the kabosh on this poop, because he is starting to look selfish.

And you know what's funny, for some reason I never expected this behavior from him. I really thought he was loyal to the core and wanted to win the cup so bad that he'd take less for the benefit of the team. I thought he was that type of Captain.

Is the $6.5 - 7 M number in response to Sather's request for a shorter-term deal? Like Callahan wants 7/42, but if he can't get 7, then he wants 5/35? This is so against type, and there's really no way his agent could ask for that much money with a straight face. I mean you can't even come up with a logical argument to defend requesting that kind of salary per season. I have a hard time believing that is really what is truly on the table unless it was just tossed out during negotiations at some point to send a shockwave.

We don't really know who's right or who's wrong here. The reported salary demands increase faster than the rate of inflation. The fact is we don't know. When negotiations go public like this who knows if what is being leaked isn't a smokescreen. I have a hard time believing his agent is in there pushing that much with the numbers he has produced and his propensity for getting hurt. These might negotiation shenanigans to create a lot of noise so the parties can get in that smoke filled room and get something done or at least make a decision.

Maybe he's bitter the Rangers took to arbitration a few years ago, idk just talking out of my ass here. I have no other reason why he'd be so demanding.

Well, that maybe so and as I said in an earlier post. Early in these guys careers' management holds the player by the short hairs, now Callahan has the leverage. At the end of the day it's about business just come to a resolution one way or the other.

5:26PM: The Rangers were hoping to have Dan Girardi’s contract wrapped up this week but as of today that seems like a long shot. (Darren Dreger on TSN Drive)

Dreger says that if a deal isn’t done it could send a message to the Rangers that Girardi wants to test free agency. (Dreger)

On Insider Trading, Darren Dreger said “The Rangers need to pay attention to what is going on with Dan Girardi. If Dan Girardi doesn’t come to terms this week with the New York Rangers and avoids the potential of unrestricted free agency. Perhaps that then sends a message to Glen Sather that he is going to UFA and he then joins Ryan Callahan in the trade speculation.”

TSN Drive fill-in host Mike Hogan said that Girardi would be insane not to test UFA because there aren’t many good UFA defense, “it’s a lottery win.”

Dreger responded and said “there is no question players and agents are greedy, I get it and I believe that any player who is a pending UFA has earned that right and if that pot of gold is there on July 1 then absolutely. That said, it comes with some risk. Dan Girardi has a family, is his wife happy in Manhattan, I assume she loves NYC.”

Hogan than said that even if Girardi goes UFA he could re-sign with the Rangers, to which Dreger responded, “ehh, maybe…maybe but then it gets greasy. You end up getting traded and that sounds like a plan but this is also a playoff team and they might feel a little jilted if he played that game.”

Ah, that word again, remember how Sather & the MSG buttboy crew always talk of leverage when Sather Fs over yet another homegrown RFA? Now its Cally's turn...but the 7/42 # is insane & even Cally's Mother knows that.

You got that right, Brian. When you bang on your RFAs they way Slats does the chickens come home to roost. Will say this though, Cally and G were actually treated relatively well in their past negotiations with the Rangers.

Captain or No Captain, I would much rather see the Rangers lose Callahan than Girardi.

Maybe, maybe something else there why the agent would push for so much dough? He knows the Rangers Cap issues & knows his client is not worth that $.

This is terrible. I don't remember a season where there was so many ups and downs in such a short amount of time.
