Team defense negates the 1-6 defensemen slotting.
Today was a team effort on D. Aside from the flurry of scrums in front of Mason today, the team commitment to D was solid.

Luke Schenn has been placed in an impossible position among fans. There is nothing he will ever be able to do overcome the feelings of loss fans express with JVR somewhat flourishing in Toronto. But the game is more than just scoring goals.

Schenn--so long as he stops trying his spin move--gives them a solid peg to build a blueline around. He can eat minutes. He is still relatively young. And when he's paired with someone with a remote sense of defensive responsibility (most of season has been paired with either Meszaros and Streit), he plays a much better game.

I'm not overly worried about the D-corps or the future with this D-corps. And while I would love to get a top-tier defenseman to replace Timonen when/if he decides to retire--if the forwards keep their gaps tighter and backcheck, a lot of the problems tend to go away.

But we need to move away from the constant talk of "losing" JVR. I mean, seriously--who plays those minutes if that trade isn't made? The Flyers gained a solid (not great, not all-star) defenseman, maybe a Chris Therien-ish guy, who can be built around for years to come.

They need to keep that commitment to team d and shorten the gap coverage. They've shown they can do it when they went on that nice stretch in December. They showed it again tonight. Let's see if they can keep that commitment level up. If they can do that--they can play with anyone in this league.

I think the problem people had with the trade is that Schenn doesn't possess much offensive ability or speed. His potential is limited. He's not really a shutdown d-man, but he doesn't play a two-way game either. Guys like him aren't as difficult to obtain in free agency. He's still young so he may get better, but I see him being a little better than Grossmann (When Grossmann is playing well).

For JVR, I was hoping for a guy with a bit more potential and two-way play ability. I felt they settled.

I don't hate Schenn either. He's been solid lately. He's had a rough year though.

only complaint about today, was the amount of pressure Mason had to deal with.
Establishing a stronger forecheck, & keeping the puck deep alleviates the pressure on him. But don't get me wrong I'm happy we won!

I agree keeping the puck down at the other end alleviates pressure on Mason. They needed to do that more today. That being said, let's not lose sight of the fact this Kings team is one of the best teams in their own zone that I've ever seen play the game.

They are a great defensive team, but their style borders a lot of interference & obstruction, it looked like a pre 2004 playoff game today

Edit. 28 goals by Kessel 14 set up by JVR.

They are. When a team plays that style, the fans need to accept that they will go through scoring droughts like the one they're in now. They are a team built for the playoffs.

Funny I seem to remember this very team a) beating the Ducks earlier in the season and b) playing a game that should have gotten them a point a few nights ago against them. If not for a few unlucky bounces, that game would have had a whole different complexion.

This team can hang with playoff teams. I don't understand the delusion of some (not specifically calling you out, 2real) that this team just automatically folds against "good" teams

Do you choose not to remember the 3rd period of that first duck game?

Flyers won, but I thought they looked better against the ducks two nights ago. Flyers are a mediocre team, of course they can hang with any team on any given night

missed the game as I was out with the fiance (she didn't want to stay home and watch hockey. damn it) ... but happy as hell to see the win.

I read some comments that the Flyers didn't play well? Mase saved the day, I'm guessing?

I think the Flyers played pretty well against the elite defensive zone play of the kings. They couldnt really get sustained offense for long stretches. You would be guessing right that Mase saved the day but the team played pretty well.
