Flyers need to trade Kimmo, Downie, Grossmann, Mez. Players that won't be back next year for pieces they can use to trade for better defenders.
Do what the Sharks did, buy and sell. - Winning
The Sharks had a very deep defense and they got a deal they couldn't refuse. Kimmo is our best defenseman and he hasn't ruled out coming back next year. He's still a #2 defenseman with a NTC. |

You and I have been in his corner the whole season. So glad he is still in O&B. Might be one of the best contracts Homer has signed. - moylander
he never quits, never backs down, not as skilled or as fast as the top guys but so much heart
to me he is a perfect Flyer |

If were on the bubble, I would not trade him. I don't think he would accept a trade unless the team was out out of it.
The only way I trade him is if someone blows you away with an overpayment AND Kimmo agrees to it.
A late first round pick isn't going to set this team up for the future. They can succeed in the future AND keep Kimmo this year. |

I think if they just keep all their draft picks and try and add a blue chip D pick or two every draft they will be fine.
Sure if they are out of the playoffs by TDL then things change but I am OK being patient, keeping all the prospects and young guys for now. |

Coburn is solid, but he has long stretches of inconsistency as well as little offensive production. Kimmo is still the best defenseman on this team. If he comes back next year, he will, probably, be the best defenseman on this team again. |

Lets chart Pronger Chara Weber in the same category,
That's 3 players
How many people have been drafted in the nhl?
thousands?
good luck with those odds. |

If we're doing unlikely hypotheticals, I might as well mention that Weber was picked in the 2nd round.
I don't see why you sacrifice a season in order to get a late first round pick. |

If Grossmann and Schenn could commit interference with impunity like those guys did today they would be a lot more effective.
Anyone else laugh out loud when Carter came down the wing in the 1st and unleashed a shot that went high, wide and all the way back into his own zone? It brought back so many memories. |

1st bold, yes, I thought we could have had 8 power plays today if most of the pick plays were called, if your style of play calls for that, I guess its not noticed as much
2nd bold yes, thought the same thing & snickered
obviously this was Mason's game, he was lights out
But I thought Luke Schenn & Gustafsson both played extremely well today, & I don't recall them making any errors, Streit, aside from his horrible up the middle clear turnover also played very well.
Up front Coururier was awesome, as well as Simmonds, both checked & battled hard! |

Lol. I did and knew someone would post it. I was hoping that he'd get a wide open net late in the game and not be able to bury causing a never ending debate on whether it was blocked or he just chocked at a critical juncture. (See 2010 finals vs Niemi. ) |

Coburn is a solid 2/3 defenseman. - wolfhounds
Team defense negates the 1-6 defensemen slotting.
Today was a team effort on D. Aside from the flurry of scrums in front of Mason today, the team commitment to D was solid.
Luke Schenn has been placed in an impossible position among fans. There is nothing he will ever be able to do overcome the feelings of loss fans express with JVR somewhat flourishing in Toronto. But the game is more than just scoring goals.
Schenn--so long as he stops trying his spin move--gives them a solid peg to build a blueline around. He can eat minutes. He is still relatively young. And when he's paired with someone with a remote sense of defensive responsibility (most of season has been paired with either Meszaros and Streit), he plays a much better game.
I'm not overly worried about the D-corps or the future with this D-corps. And while I would love to get a top-tier defenseman to replace Timonen when/if he decides to retire--if the forwards keep their gaps tighter and backcheck, a lot of the problems tend to go away.
But we need to move away from the constant talk of "losing" JVR. I mean, seriously--who plays those minutes if that trade isn't made? The Flyers gained a solid (not great, not all-star) defenseman, maybe a Chris Therien-ish guy, who can be built around for years to come.
They need to keep that commitment to team d and shorten the gap coverage. They've shown they can do it when they went on that nice stretch in December. They showed it again tonight. Let's see if they can keep that commitment level up. If they can do that--they can play with anyone in this league. |

That's what teams should do. This team hasn't in years, so what's the plan for the time between Kimmo retiring and Morin developing into being NHL ready? Gus, a 4th rounder and a guy literally given to us to take Boosh off the Canes hands? |

only complaint about today, was the amount of pressure Mason had to deal with.
Establishing a stronger forecheck, & keeping the puck deep alleviates the pressure on him. But don't get me wrong I'm happy we won!

If Jake got a rest until the Olympics and maybe missed them as well it wouldn't be the worst thing. He is clearly struggling to get much on his shots after that POS Clutterbuck slashed his fingers. |

yeah I noticed that, he's struggling to shoot, and a game like today wasn't his style, playing in a pick setting phone booth.
Even having time to heal, still, its a shot to the head & you never know if 2 weeks would be enough if its serious.
honestly, I know the players want to play, but I don't give a crap about the Olympics, I don't like the players playing, it compresses an already long season, plus the world is not what it used to be either, I just don't think its worth it anymore.
I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but the teams that pay them should be the one & only playing commitment. |
