We can have a rail system built in the next 10 years that will span the entire city... or we can have one line with 5 stops that will take 20 years to make.
Clearly the second option is better. - Feeling Glucky?
do you have any idea.. i mean any.. on the amount of money GO spends on winter maintenance?
i'm guessing no. |

do you really think the majority of the voters give a rats ass?
their own personal bottom line is all that matters. no one gives a (frank).. or not enough do to make a difference
also.. you and gluck with your anti subway stance shows a bit of naiveness when it comes to canadian infrastructure i am sorry to say
above ground rails in canada would routinely be shut down in winter.. unless of course you provide massive maintenance budgets to keep them going.
in the end.. underground rail in canada IS the cheapest bet. you might not like it.. but its true. - Dozzer

I understand how bad canadian winters are... but do you have any idea how badly Toronto needs to upgrade its infrastructure in the short-term? Long term subways are better, agreed. But we can't wait over 100 years for a full subway system to be built |

The (frank)ing TTC Union needs to be taken down. (frank)ing $30/hr to pick up garbage or look out the window of a subway car. |

^ That guy doesn't live in Scarborough. I do. It's (frank)ing poop trying to get around. I hope they put a proper subway in. The amount of people that live there that use Public transit is huge. The STC line goes to Bloor, should connect to FV (for GO BUS')
I just hope they don't take out Johnnys to make it. |

I'm not anti-subway.
I'm anti-subway to nowhere.
Why would we build a subway that only has 3 additional stops, in which projected ridership out to 2032 will still be far below LRT capacity?
LRT seems to work well in northern Europe. Weather is not an issue that should have a bearing on this debate.
Take the money and spend it on the Downtown Relief Line - which will have an instant ridership, relieve pressure on the Yonge Line, and allow the Yonge Line to be extended up to Thornhill and beyond.
Hey, look what I just did there - I actually looked at facts and data, instead of shouting Subways Subways Subways! |

yes.. you can.
short term solutions only make the proper approach take longer and be more costly in the long run. A little suffering now avoids a lot of suffering later.
trust me on this. infrastructure is what i do.. i've seen cities take the approach you just suggested.. all it does is (frank) them and more importantly, the tax payers in the end.
above ground transit in canada is (frank)ing stupid. a full third of the year requires it to be maintained in winter conditions. thats not just the trains and the tracks.. its the landings.. you expose your self to liability lawsuits by a huge margin for slip and fall accidents. above ground trains are massive eyesores.. and have a far higher rate of pedestrian fatalities.
ford is right to take whatever bribe he took to go underground. ultimately its far cheaper and better solution.
the toronto liberals are letting their own political agenda actually skew their own common sense. |

that will never happen.
never.
There are a lot of routes in scarborough that need more access. And in Etobicoke. And in North York. And in East York. You can't hit all these spots with the 5 spots they want to add to Scarborough. You can do it with light rail. |

when it boils right down to it.. in canada, underground is far smarter in the end.. and cheaper. |

Legit question: If you put up walls and a roof over the light rail... wouldn't that pretty much nullify the issues with snow and ice on the tracks and stations?
And wouldn't that be a lot cheaper than digging out all the tunnels required?
edit: I don't mean mixed traffic rails, I mean dedicated lines. |

wedgie. toronto is off the lake in one of the most heavy weatherbelts when it comes to precipitation.. its NOTHING like northen europe. throw that idea right out.
as for your 2032 mark? thats basically next week when it comes to infrastructure planning.. so throw that out as well. for instance.. storm sewers in ontario are typically designed around 100 year storm events.
thats right.. a century.. thats infrastructure timing.
no.. you yourself likely wont enjoy the reqards of proper planning, but your kids will.. and especially their kids.
you need to look further into the future than what effects you when it comes to good infrastructure planning.

not at all. snow doesnt just fall straight down.
if anything a solitary roof creates a wind tunnel of sorts increasing the likelyhood of freezing.
also.. here is the thing you guys arent considering. when digging up these lines sewers and electrical can all be upgraded to current standards at a fraction of the cost.. because you take care of all the effected underground utilities at the same time you build the subway.
trust me.. up front.. its a massive expense.. long term.. it saves a city a boatload of money |
