Im genuinely curious, when does spring thaw typically happen in Ontario?
- sanfordnson

it's tough to tell... we get a thaw, then another blast of winter, and then another thaw... and it can repeat like that a few times.

I'd say late march, early april.

Just so many teams that are pretty much all about the same

Toronto, NYR, New Jersey, COlumbus, Detroit, Ottawa, Philly ... you might even put Montreal in there.

They are all pretty mediocre teams.

Yeah good point. I forgot about those, I was a city boy, so I don't think I ever saw the worst that Alberta had to throw at me.
- mykokes

In my early rig days, we got moved to a reserve for a while outside of Lethbridge. About -20 the one day, and up in the derrick the winds were blowing over 60 kmh. I actually just climbed down after a couple hours in the middle of tripping out pipe and the driller stopped yelling at me once he saw how frozen my face was. It was beet red. I actually had (frank)in cracks on my face lol. I was allowed to wear a full balaclava when I came back to work. Only time I felt worse pain was when I 3rd degree burnt my entire foot.

yup. As I found out... some bumholes will look for someone following too close, and slam on the brakes.

That's all the rage ... Insurance scam !

There have even been cases of people sitting in traffic and ACTUALLY "backing up" into the car behind them , then claiming they were rear ended

Until they tried it on a guy with a dashboard camera

Good stuff. Now look up windchill values.
- sanfordnson

-24 to -13 where I grew up and it is way colder here in London when it hits anywhere near those numbers

how quaint. i dont care if you are rural ont or rural alberta the wind still hits you the same.

my point is that albertans like to talk tough.. when its not as bad as they say.

winter anywhere in canada is tough.. unless you are right in the core of a major city and the sewers are heating things up from underneath

I've lived here for 35 years and every single winter sees at least one period where windchill values hit at least -40 or -50. Prairie winter winds are no joke.

I worked in NB for a winter once and I will admit that a wet cold seem to just sink into your bones, but if you asked me which type of weather Id rather be on a monkeyboard in, Id pick anywhere not Alberta.

Just my two cents. In the end, it's Canada. It's cold.

- sanfordnson

Sudbury, North Bay etc is just 4 to 4.5 hours north of GTA. It is nothing to see -30, -40 air temp at times during the winter. That's what I call ice fishing weather. We're tougher than what most mid westerners think. Long Point, which is south west of us was calling for 106kmh winds last night and -22 air temp. Just another day in paradise.

yeah.. its cold.

how it gets cold varies from place to place.. but ultimately.. its cold.

cept in vancouver.. those coddled nucks fans have it easy

they're pampered. awe, it's to warm and rainy. waah.

I grew up on the east coast, lived in Ottawa.. and have spent the last decade in southern alberta. I get the dry/cold argument, and it's true.. but I've always found southern alberta to be the worst.

I think maybe it has something to do with the never ending back and forth. its -3 right now, and by 6 tonight it could be -33.. and no one would be surprised. body is in a never ending struggle to adjust.

especially when you've basically broken every bone in your body over the course of your life. healed bones don't like temperature swings.

That was the one difference there and here...here no matter how cold it gets your nose just continues to run or hurt...there, whatever's in your nose become crust. Yeah, I totally concede, rural Alberta is terrible.

Alberta generally has tougher, colder winters.

10 degrees makes a huge difference. compare -2, -12, -22 they feel real different.

We're all wimps compared to some places in Russia.

Still though, nothing matches my winter in Norman Wells. None of us really understands cold below the 60th. The push called it a day the one day when he saw a steel pry bar literally break in half. (frank) was that miserable. Came home with a massive bank account, but vowed never to return.
