Don't you think Gio would make the backend a lot better though? Gardiner is a maybe. Giordano is a yes. However you feel about potential, it's still just potential. Giordano is right now good. - sanfordnson
Gio would make the Leafs a solid contender in the East, imo. |

Would the Leafs fans like Gardiner and a First for Giordano? - The-O-G

No.
Jesus, people were giving us grief about the Leafs picking up Holland for a 2nd...
It's not that Gio isn't a good player, it's that the Leafs aren't selling high potential youth for vets yet. |

Yea, but they're rebuilding, and get a very good young piece on the back end, for some guys who won't be around when the team is half decent.
So they don't mind it too much.
flamers. - Feeling Glucky?
Trust me when I say that a lack of veteran presence during a rebuild is a baaad idea lol. |

That's why they're getting Clarkson
But that's also why the Leafs were signing guys that had no future with the team and playing them ahead of the youth... insulate those guys so they don't come into a losing environment. |

Don't really think you would need protection with Gio. He would make the Leafs pretty damn good. |

I do think Gio would make the team better right now and would love him on the Leafs - he is exactly what they need. Although none Leaf fans don't want to admit it or don't see enough of him, Gardiner is looking really good out there (albeit with some bad decisions) and is also exactly what a team like Calgary should be targeting. Adding a first is overpayment though and Leafs aren't a cup contender so they dont' need to overpay in a trade. Adding something from the Leafs like a B prospect, IMO, is a good trade for Calgary. |

And saying the Leafs aren't far along enough to start trading youth for vets isn't being very homeristic. |

Perhaps. If a player like Gio were available though, other teams may be willing to add that 1st. like Edmonton, although Calgary would never trade him to us lol. |

I get what you are saying but when you can add the piece that you so desperately need and use something you have in others (young PMD) then you do it...
Gio is only 30 and still has a lot of hockey left in him and the Leafs aren't rebuilding. |

They're competing for a playoff spot every year now. That's getting pretty close. |

I wouldn't rule it out no. They've acquired enough youth and high draft picks. It's the type of deal they have to make now. |

30 years means he'll be out of his prime while the Leafs are competing, while Gardiner would be entering his.

Edmonton's 2014 first for Gio - that would be great for Calgary and not so great for Edmonton. |

Gluck. I don't think you realize how good Gio is. Add him to the mix and your back end gets rock solid. He is 30. He has at least 5 good years left. Also, some real solid veteran leadership to bring the young prospects in the system along. |

A trade of that sort of magnitude would never happen between them anyways. |
