yeah i heard that too actually. too many guys who are willing to stay sober looking for work.
if the rest of canada has a job boom and the sober labourers head back to the more populated areas of the country.. they'll start to lift the ban. lol - Dozzer
no doubt. once the east coast types stop coming to ab for money, standards will be out the window again.. |

more like a snubber or a service rigger. They're the worst. trust me, I was one. Takes a bit to get over the money you're making and prioritize whats important, but you have to learn or you'll be one of the guys that's in his 50s with nothing to show for it still working as a floorhand.
Pipeliners, (frank) they're savages. - sanfordnson
Guys...
How do I get one of these jobs? |
|
|
|
yup, especially in Ft.Mac. You need a high school diploma, and they want actual proof. Fail one drug test and you're gone. get caught with booze or drugs in camp and you're gone. Forget to lock out equipment and you're gone. No questions asked. For the money they shell out, they expect some discipline. - sanfordnson
plan b was to pay for all the wives to move into camp to.. |

there is always someone willing to stay sober for work.
sanford may be right.. now the oil guys have gotten used to sober camps.. they wont let it revert. |

Soooo who thinks I should start Martin Jones tonight vs Columbus?
Columbus has been hot and I'm worried Jones will get lit up. Our goalie categories are W, GAA, SV% and SO. - markmark

yeah.. there will always be sober workers available i suppose.
if not canadian ones.. then foreign ones..
honestly.. if you make that kind of coin doing a job you should stay sober. - Dozzer
I agree 100%. If you really need to be intoxicated that badly, then work at WalMart or something. They don't care. |
|
|

what area are you in? Considering the influx of people Alberta is expecting you should have a poop ton of work. - sanfordnson
I live in medicine hat.
I could have tons of work, I had a pretty bad day last may and haven't worked since. still busy with physio appointments and such. |

once the standard is set, it shouldn't be tough to maintain.
from what I hear those camps are so isolated.. the precedent just had to be set. |

The problem I think with Ashton and our attitudes towards him is that he was brought up at 20 years of age (when most guys of his ilk are either coasting in their overage year in junior) or just getting used to the AHL level and what we saw was another Christian Hanson/Brayden Irwin. The fact is though he was only 20 and not some found wallet. Because he went pointless then, and then regressed badly last season in the AHL doing the things he should've been doing the year before (because some idiot thought the NHL would be good for him), we wrote him off. The kid has worked his ass off, I see it in the 4 or 5 minutes he plays. He's on the right side of the puck all the time, but one mistake (usually because Orr or McLaren aren't where they're supposed to be) and bam, we all say he sucks. I think he's going to be a very useful 3rd liner, if not here, but somewhere else. His AHL numbers are pretty stellar this season too. - mykokes

It's wayyyyyy different then when I started lol. I caught a driller smoking crack in the tool shack once and I reported it (because this assclown is running elevators up and down above my head and could kill me easily), and in thanks they skidded me for not "showing loyalty" lol. |

Guys...
How do I get one of these jobs? - Feeling Glucky?
The holy trinity of oilfield work: Class 1 license, H2S ticket, First Aid. Come here with those things and Id be very surprised if you started at less than 80 000 a year. If you have an engineering degree and go to Ft,Mac....lol, anything less than 150 000 would surprise me a lot. engineers and geologists are becoming millionaires up there. |

Are living costs not much greater there though? From what I hear, making 80k in most areas of Alberta doesnt equate to much when you consider taxes/living costs etc. |

Its not as bad as people imagine most of Alberta. You can still buy really nice houses for 3-400 000. Calgary and Edmonton are worse of course. Ft.Mac is off the charts though. Don't stay there unless you have to. I'll be starting at Horizon next month and im fly-in/fly-out camp work. Its the only way to go, especially when even just renting a room in Ft.Mac can run upwards of 900 a month. |

depends on the kind of work
very little in the way of manufacturing and labour
between london's industrial tax rate and the obsessive need to be unionized no one will set up shop here.
for medicine, engineering, insurance, etc type work there is lots. |

really?
i'd have thought London would be one of the easier places in Canada to find work.
that only means so much though. Moncton historically has one of the better unemployment rates in Canada, but the wages are poo.
southern alberta seems to have tons of work, great wages, and afforadable living (- Calgary) |

Big truck license.
H2S is a course you take for working with sour (hydrogen sulfide) gas, which is a good idea since it can quite realistically kill you. |
