Another argument that could have been made last year and they did get those (2) wingers.
- Deadstar

But last year we brought in 2 top six wingers ... Then disco played a hall of fame winger on the opposite wing and played the other in the bottom six ... I'm talking about trading for 3rd line players ott , McGinn , kenndy(I wish) , Cooke ( I wish) et

To me, they didn't get the right players, they got the most expensive players. The two are not always synonymous.
- jmatchett383

I can see how Iginla didn't necessarily fit in the top lines, but both players were gritty, aggressive, playoff type players, according to their track records (no matter how old those records are). I don't really buy they weren't the right fits. Every team wants to be harder to play against, get more playoff experience at the deadline. Those players should have made the Penguins that way.

I don't like the win now mentality and forgetting about the future. You can have both. It doesn't mean you have to be ridiculous and mortgage all the future for now. That is irresponsible for a GM to do so.
- Oneonta Penguin

How is trading young d prospects that can't all fit in our system for forwards we need and can keep long term mortgaging the future??? I'm not saying a rental like iginla or morrow

Oilers blog said they are playing Gagner on the top line RW maybe as an audition for the Pens. Interesting however I really don't know much about Gagner.
- dbell646

From what I've seen, he's always seemed to like he had really good vision and good skill. Not sure if it's just under performing in Edmonton, but watching him here and there, it seems like he hasn't ever been able to put it together consistently.

Not sure what the wanted return would be though...

Gagner would have to be in the top 6 to make it work and i don't really see him as an upgrade over what we have now when healthy.

Pass.

Something centered around Letang and Eberle is much more interesting to me.

Can he skate? Blogger mentioned Letang, Maatta, and Nisk. I'd assume it would be Nisk plus but I'd be afraid of what the plus was

So assuming the following occurs once everyone is healthy, the Pens will have $3.76 Million in Cap space come the deadline.

Taylor Pyatt is waived
Dupuis remains on LTIR
Vokoun remains on LTIR
Ebbett, Conner, Sill, and Despres are sent down.

Now if we make a trade someone else will have to be moved as well to create a roster spot, so whoever gets moved, their cap space would be available too.

Some will argue that Despres will not be sent down, which is fine, but somebody from the D has to go once Martin comes back, that will give us 9 D with Despres being the only eligible to be sent down. So unless we are waiving Engelland, which I doubt. Despres is going down or Niskanen, Letang, or Bortuzzo are gonzo via trade.

EDIT: Oops, I missed Gibbons, for some reason CapGeek doesn't have him on the roster. So he would still be on the team, with Kobasew being the extra skater, so our available space would be $3.21 Million.

That's much more interesting to everyone but it's not going to happen. It would have by now IMO. They know they need a letang type player and we know we could part with him for an Eberle type player. Some body isn't willing to part with one of them

That's fine, I just disagree. It's not like these players have been on the block for a long time if at all. Edmonton is going to have to make changes sometime soon, major changes.

Actually, the Letang for Eberle trade wouldn't work currently, as in that situation, the Penguins would be over the cap. Remember that Letang's contract is only hitting at 3.5 Mil this season. It would be able to be done once Dupuis is put on LTIR

Yes, they were "playoff" type players (although I think Murray, stinks, but I digress). However, that doesn't mean they were the right players. Again, name the last time a team got the TDL "prize" and won the Cup that year. Guerin was the consolation prize to Jokinen in 2009, and the only one post-2004 lockout I can think of would MAYBE be Recchi in 2006. It just seems like you need to acquire players to fill a need as opposed to getting them because they're good.

Edmonton has known for quite sometime they need to make changes. They haven't been flirting with the playoffs recently. I hope I'm wrong because I love Letang but I don't think there is a dramatic drop off if he gets traded. Also gives us a bit of cap relief and an extra spot on the D for some of these young guys. Imagine Crosby with someone like that. Wow

Well if you're labeling 1 player as a TDL "prize" and trying to match it up to the 1 cup winner every year, the odds aren't going to be in your favor regardless.

that stretch when crosby had both neal and kunitz put me right back on board of thinking how important a winger for him would be again. the dupuis injury really is a devastating blow, because if he was still an option, a first line winger would enable dupuis to be slotted on the third line and internally solve that depth issue. As it stands now though, the bottom 6 being improved from outside the organization stands to me as the biggest area of concern.

that being said, i cant think of anyone in the bottom 6 target range who i would want to move one of the core prospects for.

And that's my point. Very often, it's the more subtle moves, the depth moves, that pay off in the playoffs. The big fish doesn't often put a team over the top in his UFA year.

A core prospect shouldn't be moved for a bottom-6 player. An offseason deal is more likely. Or, if you have a glaring need (someone to fill Dupuis' spot ont he top line, for instance), that's where they move should be for one of them.

They've made some front office changes...sure. But not a ton of changes with the roster. Up until last years draft they really hadn't put emphasis on using a top pick on defense(Darnell Nurse)

That's great and all but they need to start working on other NHL ready parts now. Seems to me that a trade of a top forward would set them up with what they need now. Not saying they'd want to deal with the Penguins but they should with someone.

Taking cap restrictions away, would you guys trade Despres + a 2014 1st for Eberle? He would be a good fit for Sid's line.

Edmonton would never go for that.
