With everything we're learning about head injuries, and the lawsuits...I really think it will go the way of boxing, only with multi-billion cathedrals to pay for, they won't be able to just slip into obscurity, they'll be done.

I don't know. You might be right. I thought about the head injury aspect. Currently, just from the HS games I attend, it doesn't look like the numbers are down. Not sure about the lower levels though.

Also read an article about the NFL being concerned about attendance due to high def television with all the amazing camera angles. Along with high ticket prices it is making the consumer want to watch the game at home......

A major problem for football; potentially (if not, at this point, in actuality) a major problem for hockey, too.
- StLBravesFan

Easier to deal with in Hockey though...football is predicated on violent collisions happening on every play. Without significant rule/equipment changes, they could oth be headed for some trouble. Football more than Hockey though.

Its why they are trying to or have made all stadiums Wi-Fi friendly. So they can watch the replays and get all the red zone coverage.

Baseball teams don't want any more than about 40,000 seats - they want to create an urgency for tickets so they get a big advance sale and more season tickets.

The Indians used to play in Municipal Stadium - 80,000 for baseball. No one bought seats in advance: they'd wait for the day of the game, knowing there would always be good walk-up seats.

Almost all of the new baseball parks are 40,000-45,000.

- StLBravesFan

I guess that would do it. I'm always surprised at how many people go to day games during the week.

Yes ........I have this argument with my friends all the time who think I'm crazy for having my son in hockey rather than football. I try to tell them the object of football is to hit the person in front of you every play...unless you are at a skill position and even then you will have some sort of contact most plays. At the lower level my son is at...he will be 9 next week.....the only hits are incidental collisions. There is very little checking and most of the time if they hit their head it's because they fell....

My brother has season tickets, and rarely goes anymore. Seems like there is always a better reason to watch at home...it's a school night, too cold, make too much money to not sell the Green Bay game etc. I also think the proliferation of the prime time games has ruined it for many season ticket holders. Used to be every game was Sunday, at either noon or 3, with the rare Monday night game sprinkled in. Now there's Thursday night, Sunday nigh, multiple Monday Night games, plus the flex scheduling that can turn what was supposed to be a Sunday noon game into a late game...not very fan friendly for the season ticket holder. It's a lot easier to set aside 8 Sunday afternoons a year than it is to plan for the smorgasbord the NFL schedule has become.

True but even then.....the consumer is faced with a decision....do I watch the game on my 60 inch plasma....order a pizza or go to portillo's.....by a 12 pack of beer....sit in my air conditioned or heated home and be able to rewind and watch a play as many times as I want from different angles in high definition...maybe invite a buddy or two over.....or go to the game...fight traffic...pay 100 bucks for a good seat...pay 10 bucks for a beer.....etc

Yeah they will regret it. Especially a fast scorer on bigger ice. Maybe it is political. Who knows?

While hockey more than the other sports are much better live, I like to just watch at home for all the reasons you mentioned.

Not a great pr move. hope John McD wasn't with the marketing dept then. But I agreed with a lot of what he said. College students I can see going. But adults? Maybe one game a month but a lot of them go a lot. Go to work

Had an older accounting firm partner who used to go to afternoon Sox games with his dad: until the fifties (maybe a little earlier), afternoon games started at 3; unlike today, games usually took about 90 minutes to play. His father was a trader on one of the exchanges, and his workday ended at 2. On the other hand, attendance was usually about 5,000 on a good day.

That's why the Cubs started having Ladies' Days in the late forties: ladies would get in for a service charge of $.25, I think. Those lasted into the 60s, IIRC.

That is true. Good point. I always worked different hours that is true now. So many more work other hours than 9-5. But back in the 70's or early 80's whenever he said that I bet the majority of people who went were just blowing off work.
