Oh don't worry, I know he does good thing, i've said many times signing Phaneuf was the right thing, you overpay for your best defenseman because the Leafs couldn't afford to lose him. It's fine.
People are just trying to convince themselves that while his offensive numbers are down it's because he's become that "rock" defensively. He has improved, but nowhere near the level needed to be to justify the money he's getting or be considered a good #1 Defenseman.
But hey, if you're happy with him, that's great. - Scabeh
Im happy that having watched him play, you're wrong. He is over paid, but it was necessary because he was our only shot a the #1 Dman that he is. Just because he isn't Chara, which 98% of the league isn't, but hes a lot better than you concede him to be.
I just dont understand what your interest is in all this... |

Keith's contract was signed while cap was going down... also Dion's cap hit % wise will be lower so basically we got him at less than this year. So good deal... - jribout

Nobody plays against tougher competition than Phaneuf yet he carries a plus 13. What would satisfy your standards, a plus 20? |

There's no one to replace him... no one available as a UFA... no one available via trade... we'd have to give up a boat load just to replace him... there was no better option out there or it would have been taken... plain and simple... - SofaKingBored
yeah, that pretty much sums up the situation. |

There is simply no point in playing the Salary Cap ad UFA game so soon. Most of the better UFAs wont even reach free agency, and if they do it's because they demanded far more than their GMs were willing to pay. Also, players will be traded and the roster will look different by the time the salary cap becomes a factor sometime in Sept/Oct.
We could have had this convo last year, but it would have been pointless as nobody saw the Clarkson signing, Bernier and Bolland trades, Holland trade, the great Raymond discount, the Grabo buyout etc coming back in the winter of last season. - systemtool
The trade deadline is March 5, and with the Olympic break taking 2 weeks out of the season - the Leafs and all teams will have to start making decisions on their assets sooner rather than later - especially their UFAs or risky losing them for nothing
Bolland - Kulemin - McClement - Raymond |

Dozzer is trying to swap 350cid'sinto his Chevette's while Dion is smugly cruising by in his Bentley, giving away Corvette's to the needy... |

That's simply the truth. But you wont believe what some leaf fans will try to convince themselves of.
Nonis, better get a quality shutdown Dman to play along side of phaneuf.
Cant wait until Bolland gets back and we some leadership in this dressing room! |
