I'm not phased by this signing. We all knew it would happened, so lets move on. If we win wednesday, what do you expect will be discussed? Probably how the Leafs have problems elsewhere, maybe need a trade to shake things up... not that injuries riddled the team to date.

That's not others making a mistake... that's the reality of the NHL... Dion's new contract is very fair and appropriate... he would have got more than $7 million per as a UFA... we did good to get him at that price... a mere $500k over what he was already making...

Great deal!

Pretty much a no brainer signing by the leafs ,he is a good defenseman and he didnt get too greedy .500k raise on a player that important to a team is really nothing

I think it would be a fair guess, that if this slide continues, Reimer and Raymond will be traded away for assets.
And by seasons end, Liles will be gone, wither replaced through another high priced contract, or salary dumped with picks sent to a different team

- IRON.MAIDEN

What slide? They been on a point streak. If they're playoff spot is there, they wont be sellers. Until they fall significantly out, this team isn't likely going to start shedding assets.

I'm on the pro-Dion side, but I absolutely hate him on the 1st PP unit. I'd take either Gardiner or Rielly instead. Just a personal preference
- TheThrill

Ya but then he wouldn't lead the world in ice-time.

Some fans point out every negative. Some not all. Some also point out many of his postive, some not all, and you would be factoring that in too if you say what we say all the time about Phaneuf. I guess you conveniently ignored that aspect, but maybe it was just your imagination.
- systemtool

Oh don't worry, I know he does good thing, i've said many times signing Phaneuf was the right thing, you overpay for your best defenseman because the Leafs couldn't afford to lose him. It's fine.

People are just trying to convince themselves that while his offensive numbers are down it's because he's become that "rock" defensively. He has improved, but nowhere near the level needed to be to justify the money he's getting or be considered a good #1 Defenseman.

But hey, if you're happy with him, that's great.

Moving forward, need a solid D to play the right side, right hand shot with Phaneuf, he can't clear the puck on the right side and players go around him too easily, shore that up, first and foremost.

Ok...
Not as bad of a signing as I originally thought.
I thought he was already in his 30's

Still a long contract with a big cap hit, but with the cap set to skyrocket... not as bad as it coulld have been.

It isn't as bad as you're making it out to be. Take into account what other players are being paid/will get on the open market the way contracts are being inflated.

7 million is reasonable for what he brings/minutes he's capable of logging with the Leafs. We'd take 5 steps back if we lost him.

42nd in points
12th in +/-
81st in PP points
24th in TOI
8th in hits
21st in blocked shots
33rd in shots

Most common stats when assessing a defenseman of his ilk, in my opinion, and he ranks 31st overall. Just saying.

The hard facts that some on here just don't get.
But hey, at least we know who will control the radio for the next 7 years.
Just another buyout for the leafs down the road....yeah!!!!!

Give it a couple years and watch what other D will sign for... this contract will be a steal by the time Dion is in his 30's...

Keith's contract was signed while cap was going down... also Dion's cap hit % wise will be lower so basically we got him at less than this year. So good deal...

There's no one to replace him... no one available as a UFA... no one available via trade... we'd have to give up a boat load just to replace him... there was no better option out there or it would have been taken... plain and simple...
