Umm I see alot more underrating than overrating right now.
We are going to pay guys too much all the time, as is every teamin the league. It happens. It's the nature of sports. If you're going to live in fear of paying good players too much, then you might as well close up shop and put on an Islanders jersey. We haven't won a cup because we haven't been good enough, not because we over pay players. Every team over pays players. - systemtool

Apparently people did not get the Bentley and clothes sarcasm, being facetious people.
I made my points on Phaneuf so many times, not going to bother anymore, you will see the light soon, enjoy the captain for 7 plus years and the many boos that will follow from the fans at the ACC to come. - LeafMan
As soon as he gets the cash, he knocks up his wife, settles down in suburbia, and pulls a Darcy Tucker. We get stuck with his overstuffed wallet and Bentley, while we wallow just outside the playoff race for the next 7 years.

If you want to properly address the situation, overpaying Dion is not the answer, unless you plan a making a move for a Dman who can play number 1 mins and move Dion to the number 2 spot.
I could handle overpaying Dion for maybe 4 years......7 years is just plain stupid.....he'll be bought out in year 5 or trade.....unless Nonis is dumb enough to give him a NMC/NTC. - Fakepartofme
Having 2 legit #1 d-men would definitely be nice.
But a legit #2 guy to compliment Phaneuf would be good too. |

I don't think Phaneuf is worth the contract he'll receive.
I think the money would be better spent elsewhere.
This being said, I still think they should sign him. Phaneuf is a very good player, with his flaws of course, but still very effective. Overpaying Phaneuf by 1-2 M isn't a problem if the Leafs stop giving horrible contracts to depth players. - Scabeh
There is nowhere else to spend it.
That's why (imho) this whole "debate" is silly: the haterz can't explain how he will be replaced and it would improve the team.
The Leafs lack talent. Letting your best defenceman walk would not improve the team. |

my favourite argument so far is that you shouldn't ask who can be found to replace Phaneuf... because that's what the GM is there for. |

If you want to see what the Leafs would look like if they only signed players to good contracts (ones they were 90%) would be good before they are signed then look at the Islanders and Panthers. That is what we would look like... Take all the leftovers.... - jribout
or you establish a culture of winning and players sign for cheaper.
chicago's biggest cap hit is 6.3 million.
now those guys will likely want more when they become UFA.. but dont be surprised if they take less than market value to keep the team together.
thats what real leaders do. |

Well, it makes sense. We trade Kessel too. He makes too much and is no Crosby. Imagine what we could do with the money we saved. We could probably go out and get another Clarkson AND Kulemin. |

He plays 23 minutes somewhat effectively.....that time can be replaced either via trade, within or UFA.

For the record, if Dion hit UFA status, he would get more than $7 million a year.
Same with Kessel, btw. |

It will be a shave not a haircut
7.5 for 7-8 years each will be the lowest amount they get, IMO. |

Sometimes, though not always, you will see players take less to remain with the team they won a Cup with and feel could win even more with. They were right. Can Toronto offer players the same, to get them to sign for less? Or should they just sign here for less because the fans whined enough and deserve it... |

its cute how you think the leafs will be in 8th place come spring.
my guess is they are on the outside looking in.
they've been dropping like a stone. 6 points out of grabbing a top 3 spot in the division.. and only 3 points up on the rangers. who happen to have a game in hand. who have also a better record in their last ten than the leafs. |
