Army and Tucker money goes bye bye (replaced by Phil's raise), and the cap goes up by 7 mil. We aren't looking at dire financial straights just yet, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Nonis (frank) it up.

Eveyone hopes that of pending UFAs, it's not realistic. Which is why Kessel got 8 and Phaneuf will get 7. And Clarkson got 5.5 and we over paid Komi etc etc.

Cup winning and cup contending teams can get away with that, because players want to win. We're not that kind of team.

well yeah.. 5 on 5... factor in everything else and his whole point is moot.

I don't think Phaneuf is worth the contract he'll receive.

I think the money would be better spent elsewhere.

This being said, I still think they should sign him. Phaneuf is a very good player, with his flaws of course, but still very effective. Overpaying Phaneuf by 1-2 M isn't a problem if the Leafs stop giving horrible contracts to depth players.

Thats a great point, if you have no intention of winning games and have no problems letting good players walk because you prefer lower paid players. You're not overpaying Dion because of a lack of replacements, you could replace him with Holzer right now if you wanted to. The point is that you're taking your best player away at a position and would rather leave a gaping hole in his place than spend a few bucks to properly address the situation.

If you want to properly address the situation, overpaying Dion is not the answer, unless you plan a making a move for a Dman who can play number 1 mins and move Dion to the number 2 spot.
I could handle overpaying Dion for maybe 4 years......7 years is just plain stupid.....he'll be bought out in year 5 or trade.....unless Nonis is dumb enough to give him a NMC/NTC.

Umm I see alot more underrating than overrating right now.

We are going to pay guys too much all the time, as is every teamin the league. It happens. It's the nature of sports. If you're going to live in fear of paying good players too much, then you might as well close up shop and put on an Islanders jersey. We haven't won a cup because we haven't been good enough, not because we over pay players. Every team over pays players.

If you want to see what the Leafs would look like if they only signed players to good contracts (ones they were 90%) would be good before they are signed then look at the Islanders and Panthers. That is what we would look like... Take all the leftovers....

If they managed their money better, we may be able to pick up another piece to the puzzle. But NO, we are out of cash..
