Put top 5 dmen in free agency. They would easily get 8+
Look what Suter and Weber got when the cap wasnt going up..
Imagine what they'd get now? - jbold
Umm thats because they deserve it.
Dion is not a top 10 dman....even with inflation...he's worth 5.5 - 6 million max |

So, not a top 5.
But because he gets to sign his deal today, the entire leagues defensive corp will be able to point back to his horrendous contract and say, Frank, if Dion got that money, I am worth 15 million...
This will skew the entire NHLPA d contracts for the next 20 years... - bixll
..and this was already discussed and a worry of the league. Top guys are going to make oober money. Third and fourth liners with be making squat. It's how it will be, I don't get what's so hard to understand. |

Weber's contract if signed today would probably look like 16,16,14,14,10,10,10....blah blah whatever and not even close to worth it. |

quit it with the semantics.. you claim he wouldnt be paid like a top 5 because in a few years it wouldnt be top 5 money
you're just side stepping. pretty obvious. - Dozzer
Jesus man. It's not side stepping, it's looking at reality. That's the (frank)ing opposite of side stepping.
The rules in the NHL changed. No more front loaded deals. Think any #1 d-man in the NHL would be getting under 7 if they were all UFA under the current rules, with the current cap?
You won't be able to sign anybody to do what Phaneuf does for under 7 in UFA, and if you can find a team willing to trade a guy like that, you're going to be giving up a helluva lot of talent to get them. |

the root of the whole problem. GMs have too much money to toss at UFAs.. doesnt make them good deals tho.. thats our point.
you guys are right.. judging the landscape 7 is where dion should be.. but i'd rather move on without him and let someone else pay it. - Dozzer

Nope. 2nd pairing dmen in Carle and Wideman are making between that.
Again. Dion deserve 7million if Weber and Suter can fetch 8-10m if they hit free agency this off season. |

oh agree 100%
that was a good deal for the leafs. i dont deny that. but that isnt enough reason to overpay a guy.. just my opinion.. but get used to seeing phaneuf.. he isnt going anywhere - Dozzer
Oh I know.
Which means they have to move one of Gardiner, Franson or Rielly.
Which could affect Rielly's growth, if he's kept....which he better be!
Unless, he eventually takes over the number 1 mins in a few years.....if all goes well. |

move franson.. he will make too much next deal.. keep gardiner and see if RC can succeed at grooming him
anyone who moves rielly should be fired immediately. |

This team just went through a rebuild. They're not going to start another one. They're going to build on the core they have now, and that includes Dion
That's the reality. And it's not hard to grasp. So give it a try. |

It has also really hurt their team. Should a Captain's contract hurt the team. Is that being a good leader. |

So why is Kessel worth 8 million when Kane is making 6.3?
My point.
If Kessel is worth 8 million, Kane will, most likely, make more than Kessel the next contract he signs
So, Dion making 7 million isnt all that bad when you look at times contracts were signed, ect.
People will be freaking out because he'll be making 7 million, and other to pairing Dmen will be making less, but those other Dmen, like Kane, will most likely get the same, if not more money when they hit free agency in a couple of years |

so... overpay guys cause the rest of the league does? or be one of those teams that say.. if you want to play here its going to be for this much.. we're about winning.. not huge individual contracts.
create a culture of overpayment and entitlement.. or one of selflessness and team dedication.
i mean its moot.. the leafs will overpay for a second rate core group... just like always.

If you move Dion I think you're committing the team to another few years of rebuilding. And with the way this team has been playing, that may not be the worst course of action. You have to be careful, though. Kessel and JVR are offensive weapons you can win with, and at an age where they should be winning soon. You don't want to waste talent like that on a long, arduous rebuild. |

I'd move Gardiner, personally.
Ive grown pretty tired of him. I like his offense, but boy is he frustrating to watch in his own zone.
Mental mistakes like crazy. |
