let phaneuf go and do exactly this.
improves the D a ton - Dozzer
10-11 mil for the two or 7.5 for one.
I will take the two, thank you. Much better off, those two battle hard for the puck all the time.
edit: plus pair them with Rielly or Gardiner will help those two. Wishful thinking though. |

maybe? maybe not. there has to be a reason nonis hasnt extended any of the d-men yet.
nonis might just realize a big change is needed on the blue line. |

Probably true, but letting Phaneuf go with the hopes of signing both is a gamble. |

Looks like it, I didn't think he would be this great so soon. |

Some drunk on the Oilers thread keeps bringing up OEL for Eberle and Marincin...le sigh. |

Especially true with Franson...easy to see why Nonis was looking for a 1yr deal |

Oh oh, don't look now, but with Lack's shutout last night the Canucks once again have two of the top three goalies in the league! |

Rielly taking a similar route. 1 year extra domestic league (Allsvenskan vs WHL), 1 year sheltered low minutes, then, WHAMMY! |

I was thinking because Newport is asking too much for Dion for the Leafs liking. Nonis is holding off or it could be like Kessel, bang and it is done. Hope not the latter. |

According to the latest polls in Vancouver, Lack was always better than that bum Schneider anyway and he'll take over the league once Roberto stops dominating in 15 years. |

Yup.
Looking at UFAs, I'd also keep an eye on Matt Greene (good 5-6 guy, could replace Ranger/Fraser) and Niskanen (the unheralded one of the Pittsburgh D; seriously doubt he makes it to UFA though). Both are right D also which helps |

Franson has the next 4 months to show last season wasn't a complete fluke. He's a 1-trick (pp assist) pony right now. I hope he can. Factor in quality of competition and Phaneuf is irreplaceable.
5 on 5 goals against for Dmen
Fraser 8 (only 15 gp)
Phaneuf 14
Gunnarson 14
Gardiner 15
Ranger 17
Franson 22
Rielly 24 (only 22 gp) - The Law
Going back to this..... Erik Karlsson, number 1 in the NHL in this category. 38 goals against. Almost three times the number of goals against than Phaneuf.
Also, third place in total GA while on the ice. The only two ahead of him play for the Isles, and have piles of PK time.
I can't believe Sens fans were trying to argue he's very good defensively. He's absolutely abysmal. they might as well put him on wing. |

Oh to dream. We're all about signing every UFA available, just one problem, most of those guys want nothing to do with Toronto.
Leafs are good at signing the Clarksons of the league. Best to look at that category of player and agree to overpay them. |

They don't have a single NHL caliber starting goalie right now. |
