Interesting. I wonder if Emery gets the start vs Chicago?

It's looking more and more like he will. I would have liked to see Emery get a start tonight or against the Stars then play Mason against the Hawks. I feel like we need all hands on deck against the Hawks to have a chance at winning.

The problem lies more with how inept the NHL is at finding competent owners, and how inept GM's hired by those inept owners are capable of destroying the product in its infancy, than any inherent limitations of the market.

Winnipeg looks fine so far, but it might not even necessarily be a better long-term fit for the league than any of the southern markets. If the exchange rate goes in the US's favor again, or the team continues to stink, there is a high % that the team could fail again. The margins are razor thin for them, even under the best of circumstances.

Meanwhile, you've created essentially zero new hockey fans by going up there... the game isn't growing. You've got some short-run revenue growth, but you've gained very little for the future.

- Tomahawk

The NHL can't find Compentent Owners in these cities because Compentent Owners arent going to invest in a Market not able to sustain a team, and the NHL will not allow Compentent Owners that want to buy the team to relocate it to an area that will make the owners money.

The NHL doesnt need to develop new fans. The NHL is growing at a fast enough pace. What wouldnt hurt is putting the NHL into markets where there is already hockey fans, but no local hockey teams... Like Seattle or Portland... That is why Winnipeg is doing well, and will continue to do well. They are on a margin right now because thier arena seats the fewest amount of ppl in the entire league... They need a larger arena.

Also, I wouldnt worry about the CAD picking up its price over the USD anytime soon, at least not in the next 4 years.

I actually expected Emery to get the ball against the Hawks all along. Guy gets to face his former team...going to be a tough task, no matter who is in net.

Flyers catch a break again in that Crawford won't be starting for the Blackhawks. Need to take advantage of that.

Owners (Capitalists) will invest anywhere they can make a profit, and if there are a lot of people in an area, there's the potential for fans. The problem in building a base comes with assembling and maintaining a solid team and marketing.

You know something about currency the rest of us don't?

Edit: I think Quebec makes sense, and Seattle would probably be a good choice for a team, but I don't know much about that region.

1. I work for a corporate bank.
2. I know the direction this economy is heading.
3. Capitalist make Smart investments. Like buying low on a Panthers team, to move them to a hockey market like in Hamilton or Markham. But the Socialist NHL will not allow the move because Comrad Betteman says there must be 2 teams in Florida.

A long standing issue with the NHL is their short-sighted approach to things. Even back to the days of John Ziegler, when they left ESPN to sign a TV deal with SportsChannel, to reckless expansion, to losing a full season and two half seasons in the past twenty years to get a salary system that ignores some of the biggest troubles the sport faces...it's not wonder there's no team in Quebec.

I remember Phil Esposito talking about the birth of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Espo was the front man for Japanese investors and he told them to have a cashier's check for the full expansion fee ready for the pitch meeting.

Tampa was considered a dark horse at best, despite Esposito's involvement. They didn't have a new arena and the financing was not local. But Espo went in and pulled out that cashier's check and said they'd pay the full fee right then & there....and Tampa got a NHL team.

I used to have a Series 7, doesn't mean I know how currencies are going to trend in years to come.

You think our economy is going to grow or stay flat?

Ugh, you do realize "socialist" isn't a bad word, right. I mean, the idea is kinda built into the sport - National Hockey League.

And I agree, buying a franchise low is smart. And you would have to assume being able to buy low means there's problems so moving it would seem to make sense. I have no idea why Phoenix wasn't allowed to move.

The NFL is the most financially successful team sport league in the US and it's policies are full blown Marxism compared to the NHL's system.

And Bettman has a job because the owners allow him to have a job, so you have to assume he's doing something right, and a big part of that is making them money.

Further, the whole "dirty socialist" argument goes right out the window as soon as you think about who is paying for all or most of these new stadiums that cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The people, the taxpayers.

Yep.

Bettman's negotiated two massive TV deals on both sides of the border that makes his bosses a pooppot full of money. The NHL's value has grown a great deal, and outside of Phoenix, they've had little issue with selling off franchises. Even Florida was just sold to a new owner a few months ago.

Isn't it odd for a league to do things in secret? Or is it standard when the players are younger?

Agreed. The NHL seems to be doing pretty good, short of those stupid strikes and using 'Metropolitan' as a division name.

You alluded earlier to what you thought the biggest problem in the NHL is, but maybe I missed you say specifically? Over-expansion? Franchises in less than optimal regions?
