Subban and Ryan O'Reilly have the same agent. After the mess last year with RoR, and a lot of people blaming the agent (who had both of them hold out) I'm pretty sure that alone would prevent the Avs from doing this. Why deal with that guy more than you have to |

Wow if Subban is worth all that then Montreal must be ready to pay him $12M a year for 8 years.
Come on guys let's be a little serious now. - Steven_Dean
Hehe.. Probably not but I would expect around $60M for 7 years.. Think about it, salaries for teams' top players go up by about one million per year. Think of deals signed in different years by similar players (Price/Lundquist, Ovechkin 9.5M vs Crosby's). Add to this "organic inflation" that NHL teams will be getting about 14M more per year from the Canadian TV deal.
All this to say that any superstar signed at 8-9M for a long term deal may become an affordable deal in 4-5 years with a cap closing on 90-100M. I'd give him 9M to come and take over for Chara for the next 8 years.

If the Avs were offered Subban for MacKinnon and they turned the offer down every Avalanche employee should be fired. |

It wasnt O'Reillys agent that was the problem, its his dad. |

Instead of trading the player, trade the dad to another team. |

This blog is bringing back memories of June 2012... Pierre McGuire (who was considered for the Habs GM job) said on TSN that the Habs should trade the #3 overall and PK Subban for the #1 overall and get Yakupov, a franchise player.
Galchenyuk and Subban for Yakupov... Ouch... Im glad McGuire didn't get the job |

Everyone can dismiss this as Ek nonsense but logically speaking there could be some validity to this. From Habs perspective trading PK is risky at best and possibly borderline stupid as top tier d-man are very hard to find and Montreal has gone through the growing pains to get PK to his current level of play. However he is pending RFA and there won't be another bridge contract this time, he's going to get paid big $...in fact he's probably going to get a contract that will have many of you calling him overpaid. From Aves perspective they need D and acquiring a top tier minute-eater in PK would go a very long way to shoring up their D needs. I'm not saying I would make this deal, in fact I would say Habs need more than just Mac, but this or something like this could very easily happen when you have a little bit of contract uncertainty and a team with a very high need. |

What for turning down trading a future Steven Stamkos for a defenseman that can't even make team Canada and wants to get paid more than anything else. Yea, what a crime! |

Well said, Subban is part of the elite at only 24.
While I love what Mckinnon's ceiling can be he's still has to prove it, others have failed in similar circumstances. Colorado would have to overpay Montreal to get Subban. Like him or not Subban is part of the elite D-men in this league.
If I was Bergevin I would want no part in a guy like Statsny, I'd be looking for guys like O'Reily and McKinnon and Johnson established young players to add to Montreal's core. Not saying all three but two of those guys for sure before I even discuss moving Subban. |

This makes for an interesting discussion. Subban would get 100 points if they left him go like Doughty does. No need for MacKinnon, just let him play. Subban is better than Doughty too. |

How do you know he's the next Stamkos?
I bet you said the same about Alexandre Daigle or may Pat Falloon....
There's no doubt McKinnon has huge upside but you already know that Subban at 24 is part of the elite and will only get better defensively as he matures.
I would not trade Subban one for one for Mckinnon today if I was Bergevin

Contract AAV's are going to continue to escalate. Besides the cap going up, with the new CBA and the contract length stipulations the only way to "outbid" the other guy is to offer more money. In the past teams could offer the lifetime contracts at the expense of AAV as the player had the safety net of 10+ years guaranteed $. The NHL and their infinite wisdom took that away so now teams are left with no choice but to raise the AAV of players. Henrik's deal is just the beginning of this escalation

1) MacKinnon is not the next Steven Stamkos
2) Subban will make Team Canada barring an injury
3) Every NHL player wants to get paid, I don't see any of them playing for free |
