Great blog. Any fan of Slap Shot should read Jonathon Jackson's The Making of Slap Shot. Great book with many interesting stories. Including the fact that the first choice to play Reggie Dunlop was not Paul Newman but rather…Al Pacino. I'm a big fan of Pacino's work overall, but there is NO way he could have pulled that off as effectively as Newman.

I have read that book and you are right, it is a great read. And thanks, Paul for this blog. I loved every word of it. And there is one person from that Johnstown Jets team that Slap Shot was based on that still has a prominent role in the NHL and that is Anaheim Ducks Coach, Bruce Boudreau. What surprised me about that Jets team was that besides being one tough team during that time, they were also a pretty good hockey team and did win a championship.

Also noticed that Ned Dowd has become a Hollywood movie producer and produced quite a few top movies over the years, like, Last Of The Mohicans, King Arthur, Apocolypto, Veronica Guerin, and others.

Speaking of Boudreau, the apartment used as the set for player/coach Reggie Dunlop's (Paul Newman) digs was the actual Johnstown apartment once shared in real life by three Jets' players: the aforementioned Anaheim coach Bruce "Gabby" Boudreau, tough right winger and current long time Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Paul "Homer" Holmgren, and Dave "Killer" Hanson who played "Jack Hanson", the eldest of the three Hanson Brothers in the movie and who later played in both the WHA and in the NHL with Detroit and Minnesota. Boudreau also had a cameo in the movie as #7 for the "Hyannisport Presidents" early in the film.

A Goldie story I have to share, and it ties into Paul Stewart's. Goldie was with the San Diego Mariners (WHA) and like with Paul, decided to punch one of his teammates. I want to say it was Bob Wall, who was far from being a fighter on the team. Now granted it's been many years, so it might not have been Wall.
Anyway, Goldie got cut from the team. My dad, who was involved with the teams booster club, and i were down in the tunnel and there's Goldie walking into the locker room carrying a TV.
He probably was getting his gear before he left town. I often wondered if that TV was his only possession, or maybe it belonged to a teammate and he was returning it. Either way, it was a funny sight to see.

Now that was interesting!
