Can anyone tell me why Del Zotto SPECIFICALLY would help the Oilers? It's not enough that he's a defenseman, teams generally like to acquire guys that fill a specific need, as opposed to simply improving 'positional depth'. |

You guys need Matt "FRICKEN" Ellis.
But he would cost too much for the liking. |

Plain and simple MDZ is not going anywhere. Justin Falk is not an 82 game option, he's a fill in. McIlrath is nowhere near NHL ready. As soon as Falk falters a few games, without DZ, the Rangers have a huge hole in their 6.
And in regards to DZ's game, did everyone forget that just 2 years ago he led the league Dmen in +/- for quite some time? He finished in the top 5 I believe. He also led the Rangers D in scoring. Then he led ALL NHL players in hits in the playoffs before the Rangers imploded in the ECF against the Devils. DZ is only 23, has had 2 great years, and 2 off years (1 of which he spent mostly in the minors). He didn't have the luxury of developing for 3-4 years in the AHL like most Dmen, he was thrown into the fire and had to learn on the fly in the NHL at 18 years old. When he plays the way he can, he plays with ferocious intensity like he did 2 years ago when he hit everything that moved. He likes to throw his back into his hits in the defensive zone and routinely bodies players off the puck when he's battling them. This is what he is capable of, we all witnessed it. He's been unfairly assessed this year as AV put him on his unfamiliar side of the ice. He's also been a little confused because Torts wanted him to play like Beukeboom and now AV wants him to play like Leetch. Give him time to adjust, he has the ability to be a very good Top 4 Dman.
But in regards to all this talk, I would be very surprised if the Rangers give up on a 23 year old Dman like DZ who has shown he can be pretty dominant when he applies himself. |

Not necessarily true, there's been chatter that he could be a call up very soon. He's been playing pretty solidly for the pack.

Based on what I've seen, the kid's positioning, decision making and dzone skating aren't good enough yet. We'll see, maybe he's made strides but based on preseason, he was all over the place, committed to checks that saw the puck go behind him, just kinda outta sorts. |
