I'm not saying Phaneuf is a bad player.
He is just not suitable for the Captain role.
Without a good Captain / respected leader, your team will not make it to the cup finals.

Honestly, ranking the NHL teams' captains (leadership, excelling at most important moments), let me know where Phaneuf ranks in your opinion .. in mine, bottom 5.

I think a stud #1 like Phaneuf is exactly what they need. They have no guys who can eat tough minutes and play special teams consistently.

So, I guess the question is: does trading them Phaneuf for the 1st help them turn it around enough to get them out of the mud? Are you making that 1st rounder worse for yourself?

If they were comfortably in last place by the Olympic break, then you have to consider the possibility of landing a top 3 pick. But then I guess you have to ask yourself why they'd do it for a rental.

The poopty thing is that whatever the ruling is, it'll basically just be for the Backstrom hit. They'll round it up for the Granlund hit, even though it wouldn't have even been a penalty in another game.
