Eklund is up in his tower, closely watching his evil empire. His assistant walks in.

"Uh... sir...we've hit a lull on the Leafs message boards."

"RELEASE THE PHANEUF DEBATE!"

"But sir! It's--"

"DO IT NOW!"

"Uh... yes... sir. Right away, sir."

Eklund sits in his chair and begins to coldly monitor the hit counter on his computer. "Good. Good. it's all falling into place."

He becomes completely useless after about 23-25 minutes ice time. Dion should give Suter a call and inquire about his conditioning program.
- 1979AD

yeah but compare those minutes. I bet Phaneuf played way more "harder defensive minutes", battles in front of the net and against the boards down low than Suter did. When your team is better than the Leafs are at clearing the zone and applying offensive pressure, the minutes you play as defense man have to be a little easier.

Oilers offered three 2nd round picks for Braydon Coburn at the Draft and couldn't close the deal. Trades in season are much harder to make.

(frank)ing Lowe.

that man needs to realize nobody is going to trade with him until he offers up one of his young guns or first round pick.. i imagine other GMs are getting annoyed at him stocking up the way he has.. he wont improve his team until he starts offering something someone actually wants.

Phaneuf goes = No chance of even making playoffs.

Try again.

- UsernameUnknown

I'm not saying Phaneuf is a bad player.
He is just not suitable for the Captain role.
Without a good Captain / respected leader, your team will not make it to the cup finals.

Honestly, ranking the NHL teams' captains (leadership, excelling at most important moments), let me know where Phaneuf ranks in your opinion .. in mine, bottom 5.

They let Tambellini run the show way too long, as well. You don't count on the guy who took you into the "blow it up" stage to get you out.

Keep in mind that he never really did blow it up like he should have and that his "rebuild" was wholly unintentional. They got Hall that first year because they absolutely bombed.

as captain, or on D?
As a captain, I don't see anybody on the team right now that is fit for that role.
On D, Leafs will go with Franson, Rielly, Gardiner, Gunarsson and Fraser + next generation over the next years. You'd need an upgrade on D, and therefor have to probably give up some offensive talent.

Sorry, I have yet to enter their dressing room on a nightly basis to extract an accurate opinion based on observations.
But if you have, send over the paperwork and I'll take a look.

He tells his stationary that, his stationary completely disagrees by saying, "that's not enough 2nds"
