Truth is that last night's game made it obvious just how far this team is from being considered contenders.

We are lacking: 2 top line wingers, top pairing D man and a depth physical defenseman that can also move a little.

And of any of these mentioned roles, do we even have anyone in the system that has the realistic potential of filling one of those needs?

We are lacking a team with size.

(frank) the Hawks model...

go for the SJ/STL model.

I'd say Emelin is well on his way to becoming a top pairing D-man. As for the rest, I think the cap space freed up by not re-signing Gionta and Markov goes a long way toward signing the offensive help we need. And trading Pleks would also go a long way in that regard.

Seeing how we stack up against St. Louis and San Jose, I couldn't agree more with your assessment. With that in mind, I'd start moving pieces now.

I don't know the latter. But the former was overpriced and crappy. I loved it there.

it's true but none of this is new.

edit: also money to help the offense would also have been made available by not signing Daniel Briere and by signing David Desharnais at a reasonable rate. I'm not sure too many other GM's were knocking at his door with high dollar multi-year deals.

the Blues seemed to know what they were doing every time they touched the puck. Habs seemed to be freewheeling when they had it. also, the Blues are as aggressive a team i have seen in years. that forecheck is vicious. they played at a different speed/intensity level than Montreal. but even all that said, Montreal hung in. closed the gap with great shot blocking and great goaltending.

St. Louis is pretty young to be asking that question. As for San Jose, they have the right idea, but the wrong personnel. Chokers gonna choke.

Maybe it's just me but I'm tired of being happy they hung in there and relied on their goaltender to win.

$3.5M for a 60-point player is pretty reasonable. The problem is, they underestimated how much playing centre in the NHL wears down a widdle body.

those deals will sting next summer. Bergevin has quite the task ahead of him to unload one of them.

he's been playing very well. if they can get him at a couple of years for reasonable money they should but this may be the chance for him to break the bank with a contender if he plays like this for the rest of the season.

If Briere retires does the money count against our cap? Can we Pronger him on LTIR?

yes it does count--he was 35 when he signed. not sure how the LTIR thing works... not sure if the player has to fail a physical or something to take advantage of that loophole.

money is one thing, term is another. this is an older player who came out of nowhere and had a good season out of nowhere. We've seen this a bunch of times where they just can't sustain it.
