IIRC, that move also cost the Bears an undefeated season: only loss was to Miami, I think, when they had a two-score lead (or something) and the ball in the red zone, and he put Perry in the backfield - and Perry fumbled, negating a possible 3-score lead and shifting momentum to Miami.

I recall that - may not be correct.

And Ryan's refusal to play nickel, letting Clayton (?) match up with Wilbur Marshall.

I'm on board, although I'm still hoping (foolishly) for 19 & 88 to settle for a little less than market value to keep the band together, making it a moot point. Dream on right? A guy can hope anyway.

There is hope...the Sedins only took 7 million a year.

Just wanted to let you know every time I hit heavy chop on work travel, I hear "applied physics" in my head as I pound my alcoholic beverage....

...Also Sedin's were only a 4 yr deals.

Kane and Toews...1 for sure, most likely both will get max term deals.

Calgary surprises Hawks 3-2. Goalie Reto Berra was vg but Flames caught the Hawks at the right time. My Fox Chicago:http://bit.ly/Hwurcf

Also, the Sedins are 8 or 9 years older.

I wouldn't doubt that both of them get that. As to what the cap hit turns out to be, that could be interesting.

Also, it should be noted that Leddy & Saad will need new deals that summer.

True better comparison probably Getzlaf/Perry.

Agreed.

I wasn't picking at your comparison, but rather just stating another factor in the Sedin contract thing vs. Toews/Kane.

Unfortunately for us, neither Perry/Getzlaf or Sedin/Sedin can claim 2 Stanley Cups and 2 Conn Smythe's between them. Those things = $$$$$

Agreed....but still don't see being in cap hell because of these deals......from all indications it will be over 70 million next year and close to or at 80 the following year. Revenue streams from TV contracts, merchandise, winter classic, outdoor series, etc plus the owners getting a bigger percentage will make this possible.

it is actually in Toews and Kane's best interest to take a hometown discount (well at least not max), then the Hawks can roll 4 lines and the boys don't have to carry the load - it is in their best interest and their best chance of winning the cup a few more times with the hawks. The problem with lots of ice time and carrrying the load, you are more prone to injury (or nagging injuries) and mistakes and become an average player. If they get their max deal, then more of it depends on SB and Q, and then we will see more Brunettes and Olesz's for a few years until their contracts become more cap beneficial.

Wonder how much the fans dressed up as empty seats in Florida, New Jersey, Detroit, Phoenix, Dallas and a few other places are contributing to the $80 million cap projection?

Max term is fine, as long as the $ amounts don't cripple the rest of the roster.

Olesz was bad money coming back for a bad contract with Brian Campbell. We never really saw Olesz other than a handful of games. Brunette was signed for a cap friendly deal because of the cap hell the Hawks per put in under the previous regime and because the system was not ready to produce any talent. Bowman has developed a system with great potential so we will not need to sign those types of players in the future...we can pull from the system. Even if Toews & Kane sign max deals the cap will not be an issue.

Yes there are markets still hurting.....however the difference is there are more revenue streams than before. Florida will be moving within 3-4 years , Phoenix and Dallas have new owners and Jersey will have a new one soon. I wouldn't worry about Detroit. Plus if Bettman gets his way, there will be two new teams in the next couple/few years and the entry fee will create more revenue as well. The NHL, despite having a handful of struggling teams is getting healthier each year.

Find it ironic that he said it as a excuse on why the Hawk didn't win the cup more often and you're saying it about how to win more cups.

Famous piece of NFL Films video from that '88 NFC Championship game. Linebacker Keena Turner, one of only a select few, to have played on
all 4 S.F. Super Bowl teams, prior to '94, came into the locker room after the
win and said something like...'we came in here....with Bear weather...and kicked Bear ass.'

And he was from Chicago too.

- philco28

(frank) Keena Turner. (frank) him twice. My god that SOB did it all as a HS football player at CVS including ending our season twice.

Another possibility could be moving Leddy instead of Oduya.

If the organization feels that Clendening could be ready next season and/or Kostka could fill Leddy's skates to a certain extent, that could make Leddy expendable. Leddy would probably fetch a better return than Oduya, and Oduya can just move on come July of 2015 when it comes time to re-up Toews & Kane, creating a little more space that way.

It's not my favorite scenario, but it's within the realm of possibilities.

- EKolb13

Oh man. Savvy ain't gonna like that. Trade Leddy? Where do I sign?

Sure did. Many times. I believe the quote was more along ther lines of NOT wanting to win one. Given that he left Mumbles in charge for 100 years, I say he was successful. That jagoff pretty much drove me away from hockey.

I certainly would guess that the new-franchise entrance fee would not be part of HRR - that's all goes to the owners.
