The sixers are bringing this city down. Time to cut them loose.
- feelingkettle

76ers are in the Wiggens sweepsteaks. the top 3 picks in the 2014 NBA draft are all excellent. They get another 1st round pick if it's outside the top 5. Noel is going to be real good too.

If the flyers have to be really really bad it would be nice to see them get an absolute stud sniper who can score 50 goals. Of course we will stink enough to get the 6 th pick in a 5 playe draft.

I remember standing in the Coronado Cantina in Bernalillo, NM watching the eagles, with a bar full of cowgirl fans, sacking Troy Aikman repeatedly, and winning easily on MNFB in 1991. I remember actually feeling sorry for them because we were so obviously going to be kicking their sorry a$$es for years to come; I actually recall wondering how many superbowls we would win before they got good.
I felt stupid a few years later, but not as stupid as I realize I feel now because I keep falling for it. Every sports team in this city is a freaking joke that will never win championships consistently. Even the phillies manage to take a team that at the very least should still be contending for the WS and turned it into a joke. But we keep coming back with our hearts and (more importantly our wallets) open only to watch the ________ (fill in the loser team name here) get humiliated in a big game. I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooo sick of this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

this was posted on another site lamenting the eagles latest failure. i ccan relate to this. HTF did the flyers get so awful in such a short time? i've always held out hope for a fan-decade like the boston teams are providing since 2001 for their fans but i aint gonna happen here

Again I will state that they need to rid themselves of the Hartnell contract. Injuries aside he has been poor the last 2 years and if we can get some cap relief from that contract for the next few years it will be easier on them. $4.75 cap hit for the next five years is a huge hit for what he can bring. If they continue to keep him on Giroux's line and he can't keep up to the pace of play it really hinders Giroux's ability in my opinion.
- Daceroni

This Season is only 8 games old, and Hartnell obviously had a poor Season last year. But the Season before that, he scored 37 goals and led the NHL in PP goals playing with Giroux. So the question is, when he comes back, what Hartnell are we going to get? If it's the good Hartnell, 4.75M is not a huge hit for what he can bring.

To say he's bad at his job overlooks what he inherited at the time he became GM, the team's quick turnaround, Finals appearance and back-to-back 100 point seasons (with a playoff series win over the pre-playoff Cup favorites) before the struggles of the last season-plus.

The truth of the matter is that the club had a window of opportunity when Pronger and Timonen were the blue line anchors, and that window closed when Pronger's career ended prematurely and Timonen got a few years older and increasingly banged up. They haven't had a successful succession plan and that, more than Bryzgalov and more than everything else that gets thrown out there, had been the number one reason for the downturn.

- bmeltzer

And Holmgren can't be blamed for the Pronger injury. The truth of the matter as far as I'm concerned, is that Holmgren has done a solid job. Not perfect, but solid. There's been some mistakes. We all have a different opinion on that. I think his biggest mistake was bringing Laviolette back to start the Season. But overall, this team still has a bright future in my opinion, and I think they can still turn this Season around.

Played well defensively but it's showing in the teams play that they are tired. I believe it's their 4th game in 5 days.

Ron Hainsey would have been a solid addition as he is anchoring the Canes defence right now and is playing outstanding. There is a great puck moving dman available from the Coyotes right now named David Rundblad, a healthy scratch. Very average on D but would certainly be the Flyers best puck mover, similar to Gustafsson but even better with the puck. The Flyers D, namely Coburn, Grossman, Schenn and even Streit are treating the puck like a hand grenade right now. Bring in Rundblad at 670 grand, they do not come any cheaper than that. He just needs a break.
- flyerdude17

I don't know that Runblad is available. And the cost would be more then 670K on the Cap. We would have to trade for him. And I don't believe that he would be the Flyers best puck mover. That title would still belong to Striet.

i agree i think they can turn the season around ...but( always a but) the coach can only do so much the players have to give themselves a collective kick in the keester...this comes back to team leadership...were is the players only meeting the players only practice... you see it all the time on other teams the leaders step up and kick start the team....were are the flyers leaders...do we have any... were id the strong voice in the locker room...hate to say it but were is the " Pronger" type player who voices his opinion and tells the team they need a kick in the a$$... has this happened and we haven't heard about it.. are they the only team in the NHL who can keep player only meetings from the media...

that's been my contention. they were so dependent on on their aging top 2 dmen that to move out the amt of talent they have since the big trades and not have anything to show for it on D other than schenn is a failing...that and the reactionary nature of subsequent deals.
- isaiah520

3 players were moved out. JVR for Schenn. Carle was let go, but he has been replaced by Streit. And Bobrovsky was traded. Hopefully Mason's play in a Flyers uniform isn't a mirage. And if so, the Flyers have a young goalie in place for the future. And they still have a solid young core to build around. So I think that not having anything to show for it, is misleading.

Well they're called player only meetings for a reason. I agree with Bill. The best way that Giroux can lead is come out and start being the Flyers best player again.

I hope they have a sports psychologist on hand this week because this team is a mess. They might not be a true cup contender, but they should be a playoff team no doubt. They are playing like a b-squad. They need to get out of their heads and try to play without overthinking.

This team is very difficult to watch.

I agree 100%. I said the other day this team needs a sports psychologist more then a Coach. I think the biggest problems are mental, not physical.

Yes this team needs someone to lead the way on ice, have someone to rally around. Giroux needs to show why he should have the C.

Hi Bill, great job as always

I am not a proponent of rushing into a deal or making a trade just to shake things up. Furthermore with the little I've seen of McGinn and Raffl, I think the pieces are already in place for a successful forward corps once Lacavalier and Hartnell return.

The D, however, is a concern to me. Coburn and Gustafsson are the only 2 in that group that are at least average or above average skaters. The rest of the D is just too slow. With that being said, I think it would be wise to look to a team that needs a defensive dman and perhaps try to package Grossmann in a deal for a faster puck moving dman.

Thoughts?

Anyone in the pipeline defensively at the AHL level?

Mark Alt is promising. Oliver Lauridsen played well in a brief NHL trial late last season when the NHL club was riddled with injuries. Brandon Manning is a borderline NHL defenseman. Matt Konan is a fringe prospect.
