May be Laghton was a insurance policy in case Voracek were not able to play? - missingmike
Akeson, Raffl or even McGinn would be better fits in that case, and also cost less against the salary cap |

Normal Philly people are Eagles fans. The older ones and younger ones are Phillies fans. Hockey's a cult but a tremendously strong one. Sixers fans watch at home on their TV.
I think this is what it is. It'll go to the GM meetings, someone will table the discussion and enough owners and GMs will agree that the sport needs fighting that it'll die on the table.
Next time someone gets drilled from behind it will be all but forgotten.
Personally I want the goons gone and fighters ejected. I want the refs to call the cheap shots and protect the guys who have no interest in fighting. - mayorofangrytown
I was at the Buffalo-Toronto pre-season game, and it was just stupid. It wasn't hockey. It was just stupid.
The idea that a 6'5', 270 lb. guy can jump one of the superstars of the league, and get no suspension while the Leafs were handed 13 games total is just asinine. Yes, Kessel should have been suspended for the second slash, but I thought he was entirely justified for the first slash.
The fights that night had absolutely nothing to do with the game. I don't mind if two guys battle up and down the ice, shift after shift, whacking away at each other until the bad blood boils over.
But two guys who have been nailed to the bench all period, coming out during a stoppage in play and dropping them as soon as the puck drops? It doesn't add to the game at all. It's just a waste of time.
And yes, the Leafs are the biggest culprits right now. |

Costing less against the Cap doesn't matter much when you're using LTIR.

Scott is the guy who should've gotten suspended. To line up next to Kessel and tell him, "you know we have to go", is just insanely stupid. The previous fight was a fair fight, and Kessel had zero to do with it.
Staged fights just for the enforcers to see who is the toughest, need to go.

I feel the exact same way. I don't want guys like Parros and Orr standing in the way of a player who can bring some skill and hockey entertainment to the experience. There are leagues that cater to thug hockey, let them ply their trade there where people pay $10 for a ticket and there are away games when the rodeo comes to town. |

No idea. Haven't seen him play. Don't know what kind of shape he's in, or what kind of team Florida has.

Coaches give out ice time on merit in games. Also the game situations come into play. When a team get's behind late in games, A Coach will shorten the bench and play the offensive players more. I just don't think L. Schenn had that great of a game, combined with the game stuation. And his icetime was cut in the 3rd. - MJL
you also have to factor in the 7 powerplays and that they were trailing in the 3rd. 1 game is much too small a sample size to pay any attention to ice time. if they had been shorthanded 7 times and protecting a lead in the 3rd, I'm sure Schenn would have played well over 20 minutes |

The easiest way to stop it is for teams to not dress a goon just because another team has one in the lineup.
Look at last night, the only time that Orr or Rosehill did anything of note was when Rosehill took the moronic penalty for hitting Fraser and Orr cross checked him afterward.
Dress a guy who can play and ignore the guy who can't play. Mike Rupp said it best when he told Jody Shelley that he wasn't going to fight him, because he's irrelevant. |

I thought they wanted to be as close to the cap as possible to maximize the benefit of putting Pronger on LTIR.
Also, Laughton had been practicing with the team for the last part of preseason, unlike those other guys. |

They had to be under the cap at 5 pm on October 1st to realize the full benefit of Pronger being on LTIR. Nothing they do now affects the benefits of Pronger's exemption.
If Voracek was out, they would have needed a winger...they made it clear they want Laughton to stay at center, and Akeson and McGinn have more of a scoring touch than Laughton |

They didn't have to be under at 5PM on Oct 1st. They had to be Cap compliant on Sept 30th, not using LTIR, to maximize the LTIR benefits. And they also needed to be as close to the upper limit, including bonuses using the bonus cushion, as possible to get the full LTIR benefit. Keeping Laughton could've have played into that. |
