Notes & quotes: Defenseman Travis Hamonic, who left Sunday's preseason game in Ottawa early after a big hit, was evaluated Monday night for a possible concussion. He was not placed on injured reserve, so the Islanders are hoping he is ready for Friday's season opener against the Devils.
Major difference between "hoping" and "expecting". |

#Isles front office had long debate about whether to keep Ryan Pulock for 9-gm look. Opened some eyes with his training camp.
Also, this is really nice to read. I loved the Pulock pick and I love it even more now. |

I wanted Zhardov honestly but wasn't disappointed with pulock. I knew little about these kids this past draft. Looks like the right pick so far |

Still good news if they even have hope for him playing Friday. If he misses a couple of games its ok, I was worried he would be out Long term |

I still think he'll be fine. I'm just not ready to consider "hoping" the same thing as "expecting". |

Zadorov was definitely enticing, but I think we have that major physical aspect of the game covered in our system with guys like Pedan, Mayfield, Pelech, and to a way lesser extent Somerby/Leduc.
With the graduation of Donovan to the NHL, Pulock replenishes a need for a highly skilled offensive defenseman in our system. |

Only saw one preseason game with him. He made a couple incredible plays but looked like he may need a little time down in BDGPRT which is fine. Could put on a few pounds as with most kids coming up. I could tell from that small sample(not including his junior play)in that game against the Devils that he has the potential to be something special - Cptmjl
That was my thought with what I saw of Pulock, especially the bolded part...I think he's at least equal to Reinhart, at this point, in terms of awareness and positioning, plus he has that cannon, and he likes to hit people hard, which is number one on my defenseman wish list. The skating obviously could improve, and most importantly he needs to grow into a man sized body. Reinhart has the last two items on the list, to go with the overall talent, but he's not as mean....can't have everything, I guess.
The real issue with guys like him and Donovan as far as the overall team is concerned is that they are going to have to grasp the speed of the NHL game quickly after the puck drops on Friday night...we're going to need both of them to be good, and quickly, because we are really thin in the area of "solid, veteran defensemen". These rookies are going to have to be ready.
That said....the one guy I predict will eventually be better than everyone here seems to think is Kabanov. He's got the whole package. The only question (and...sorry...but I ALWAYS ask this particular question of a Russian forward) is can they get him to bring it every night? If this guy can make plays like the one he made last night on a regular basis, he and Strome going to give us a REAL issue on the top two lines in a couple of years. |

As I said, Pulock also likes to hit people, too....he may not end up being the size of a Zadorov, but I think we'll be happy overall with his physical play. I think the real deal with Zadorov is that teams were kind of afraid that he'd end up being another Flyers defenseman....like a large orange tree planted in the ice.. |

I look at it this way....hockey players get hurt (especially defensemen). We're going to need all 23 of them (plus whoever comes in from Connecticut) to be good this year, when we need them. No more "it's the Islanders" BS....it's time for this franchise to move forward in a big way over the next 2-3 years, and these kids are going to have to step up to the plate if that is going to happen. |

I'm not as high on Kabanov as I was. He's got the talent but there are notable flaws in his game. I haven't given up on him, just not as optimistic as I once was. |

If he's ever better then I think he's going to be, say good bye to all of 99s records
If he didn't lose last season to injury he would be making the team this season & possibly on JT's wing.

a year ago Pulock and Jones were being debated as who was the best defensemen in this draft class and how they would compete for top 5 picks.
Now, I think if I had the choice I'd choose Jones, but I think Pulock was overlooked this year due to his "underperformance", even though his team this year compared to last is abysmal.
I really love the Pulock pick. |

He missed 50 games last year almost lost his arm and had a hard time when his nerves didn't come back right away. I'm willing to give him a clean slate and evaluate him after this season in the Ahl |

Like I said, I haven't given up on him by any means. He, as you pointed out, missed a ton of time. But at some point he's going to have to show some flashes of something tangible. He's got a ton of potential and I think this year is going to be a crucial one for his development. |

So random prospect watch. Mikko koskinen has started to play for sibir of the KHL which s a middle of the ground team and is 2-1 with a 9.51 sv% and 1.67 GAA. Not even sure if we still have the rights to him but depending on his contract situation and how he continues to develop he might be a better option then the two kids we got in the system now |

All I know is the play I saw him make in the game against Ottawa was a top shelf NHL play. My problem with Russians....well, it's Oleg Kvasha, lets face it....who would make a play like that once every five weeks...and then disappear into thin air for the next fifteen games. If a kid can do that, he can always do it- IF he wants to. We shall see. I expect Strome and Kabanov to dominate the AHL this season- I've seen a lot of AHL hockey, and those two guys are better than "top shelf talent" for that league- very few players in that league can skate with either of them, for one thing. If healthy all year, they should score at least 1 point a game, and probably more like 100 points each when it's all said and done. I'd expect them to make it virtually impossible for the staff to leave them down there next year- it might actually force Snow to make a trade, for once. |
