All you got was 215 pounds of dead weight, lol. The guy is a career minor leaguer so not really a steal. On the other hand a change in scenery might bring out the best in this player who to this point has done nothing to impress or earn a job in the nhl. - flyerdude17
Playing the odds though, you have a hell of a better chance with a guy like Colborne than with the crap shoot you get in a 4th rounder. We have no cap issues and will be in "try-out" mode with bubble players for a while so why not? Good trade...

It wasnt a ridiculous claims by any stretch...the Flames came out on top in their first trade of the season. Cant really cut it any other way, personally. |

Wasn't ridiculous...could very well end up being true....just designed for"response"... |

meh, he showed nothing that would suggest he's ready and Calgary is weaker up front so he'll get a chance to play. The only problem for the leafs is they loose depth at center until Gauthier is ready. I hope the guy does well in Calgary, mostly because a Calgary 3rd round pick will be in the 61-65 range - ky678468
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but if a Calgary 3rd is 61-65 then you'll be getting a Calgary 4th .... The 3rd would have to be in the high 70s for the leafs to get it |

good cheap pick up for the Flames. Hope he pans out, and i wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a good 3rd liner. Wish him well. |

I agree. I wasn't big on the idea of only getting Colborne if he was the prize for taking on Liles contract. But for a 4th and no long term "bad" contract coming with it, its a win.
Any trades like this where CGY gives up only a 4th or lower for a yoing prospect with highipotential, its a good deal. |

an unproven 22 year old is an unproven 22 year old. only so much lipstick you can smear on the pig Colin. Nonis was smart to move him and start recouping all the draft picks he's recently dealt away. - DoubleDown
Yeah Nonis was smart to move him and get what he could, but his hand was forced.
So with that being said, I still firmly believe Colbourne's value > 4th Rounder |

The best part is come trade deadline, I think we'll have a few players we can "flip" to get back some of the low draft spots we've had to give up. |

well, yes I spose you did......without any idea what the acquired pick will be for the Leafs.....
you have assume colborne can still become a 'player' but don't assume the Leafs pick might end up a 'player'. - Barx
It doesnt matter who is picked with the pick, you have to look at the current value of the pick.
What you are saying is that if the Leafs select some donk who doesn't make it the Flames win the deal, and if the Leafs pick a late gem like Datsyuk then it's the best trade in the history of the world. You can't do it like that. |

I. Completely agree. Maybe not a huge loss for TO but I sense some bitterness from their fans. Nonis got something at least.
Not to stir the pot, even though I know it will, but I really think EDM dropped the ball here. Colborne would have gotten a really good shot with some talented wingers while Gags and Hops are out. If it works out, they have their big center they needed or at least a tradable asset that brings back more than the cost was. If not, no big loss but it helps while the other 2 are out. |

Yup, for sure. Cammy, Stemp, Stajan et all can be flipped to recoup the losses in the Russell, Knight and Colbourne deals. Which isn't really much anyways.
I like how the Flames are going about the rebuild. Not only do they have some good young prospects coming up but they are also stocking up on guys in their early 20's waiting for their shot. Good approach, and hopefully means less years in the dumpster! |

Yeah they could have used him for sure, especially at the cost. But given the Burke connection with T.O. and the fact that Colbourne is from here, I think the Flames had a big advantage over the rest of the league in this one. |

Burke set this all up while he was still with the Leafs.
Overpay Grabo - compliance buy-out
Overpay Komi - compliance buy out
Overpay Liles/Bring in a coach that won't play him - no compliance buy outs left
Get fired by the Leafs, rejoin Anaheim and then move to the Flames just to steal Colborne...
Burkie is sly like a fox. - magmoo

Burke's relationship was perhaps an advantage but that's it. If they offered a 3rd straight up, I can't see Nonis turning it down. |

I think a lot of people don't realize how much stuff goes on behind the scenes. Teams build their reputations with agents, players, prospects by treating people right. Not saying this was the case in this situation because I have no idea, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Leafs talked to Colbourne's agent and asked him where he would like to go, or if Calgary would be on his list.
Again, I'm not saying this played a part in it because it's just a hunch, but it wouldn't surprise me. And I do know the Leafs have a really strong reputation for treating their people right. |

If the Leafs could have kept him, they would have. But he didn't outplay Kadri Bozak Bolland or Mcclement, not his fault really but he just didn't. So rather than losing him for nothing, they got a pick in return. I think he'll turn out to be a good player, but he needs more time and it was literally impossible for the Leafs to give him that time. No offense to the Flames, but they aren't as strong up the middle so they have room for him. |
