as a lifelong Islander fan that lives in Vancouver, I would have been crushed if they'd left and gone to seattle or quebec. The team belongs there, and at some point I'm going to come to a home game. Every year (or second year as some schedules have been) I've gone to one game in Vancouver, the game the Islanders come to town. That's one game a year if I'm lucky I get to watch the Isles play in person.
I get the center ice package every year, and usually am stuck watching it in standard definition thanks to the broadcast not being in HD in my area. If I get lucky enough to see an HD broadcast it's usually the other team's feed.
I don't care if it's going to be a train ride away, or if the seating isn't optimal in a small percentage of seats, or where the scoreboard sits in the building. You all get to go to as many games as you want/can afford and get an HD feed for local broadcasts.
If they had come to seattle I'd be able to drive down several times a year for games, but it would not have been the same. The team belongs on Long Island. Brooklyn is a blessing, not a curse.
They've got 2 years to make changes to the building to get it ready for the Isles, at which time hopefully some of the concerns will have been addressed. If not, you still end up with a vastly superior situation and I'm still stuck sitting next to a couple of Canucks fans while I'm enjoying my one game per year.

Simple enough cure: Identify the poor sight line seats. Exclude them from season-ticket packages and save them for day-of-game sales only or give them to the opposing team as their comp seats for players wives, families, etc.. BOOM. Problem solved.

Give them to Rangers fans - kcNYI
I was thinking that as I typed it but thought better to save the seats UNDER the arena for Ranger fans. |

Dan Petriw: The Barclays reality; an evolution of a fan base - Dan Petriw
Nice piece, Dan. Nice to put things into perspective for people. All the whining and complaining about the team headed to bklyn needs to stop. comments like "it would have been better if they left" are nothing more than stupidity. Dont want to take a train to bklyn to watch them, but to hop a flight to KC or Seattle is better? Please.
If people dont want to go to the games when they move, then dont go. The team will find people to fill those seats. Bklyn was the best alternative. |

A lot of LIers seem to view anything west of Great Neck as an entirely different nation. It's happening, folks, so either get your passports in order and venture the extra 20 miles to the foreign land of Brooklyn...or just don't go. |

Great blog.....and BTW, this is EXACTLY what the Washington Capitals did and they are now one of the better franchises in the league. They moved from rural Landover, MD to downtown DC and game night down there is fantastic. Did they lose some fans? Sure, but they gained a lot more. |

Excellent post! Brooklyn is the big time. It is the big room. Why should the Isles play the small room anymore? |

Funny thing is I think 200 or so seats out of almost 16,000 have an obstructed view. From the complaining you would think 8,000 seats were obstructed. Also If I hear one more person complain about the scoreboard not being directly over center ice I'm gonna crush them. Who gives a fack if the scoreboard is in the concourse - Vukota
WTF is going on with that facking score board? What did Helen Keller center that thing? |

Yep. There are no obstructed seats at the Coliseum and you can see the scoreboard from every seat in the Coliseum as well...*shaking my head, then smacking it*
Dan, great blog. I've made my feelings on this issue abundantly clear in the past. Grow the (frank) up you whiny bastards. Every other team in the city needs to use mass transit, thank your local congresswoman, Town of Hempstead. |

You know how many times I've sat close enough to the top of the Coliseum where I had no idea how much time was left in the period? And people complain about (frank)ing sight lines. Jesus Christ. |
