Dan Petriw: The Barclays reality; an evolution of a fan base - Dan Petriw
Good blog Dan, sure it will cause quite a stir. The alternitive to Brooklyn is of course horrible and any fan who says otherwise isn't a fan. The flip side of this is giving an opinion is just that. An opinion. If someone says their seats sucks and they can't see the ice how is it any less viable opinion as someone who enjoyed their experience? I've heard/read peoples opinions from both sides. More from the former unfortunately but hopefully there is something that can be done to correct at least part of the "problem" within the next two years? With that said in the end the only thing that should truly matter to any fan of this team is the fact that they are staying here in NY. When it comes down to it that was my biggest fear and I think most on this thread and any other Islander fan. Well, I guess this should get the comments going |

Speaking as a Rangers fan from Long Island, we know whats its like to be a fan of a Team that doesn't play locally. If the Isles fans wanna complain, lets bring up the fact that NO NY team plays on Long Island. What happens when you wanna go see the Mets? Gotta go to Flushing. The Yanks? Head over the Throgs Neck to the Bronx. Wanna see the Jets or Giants? Forget it, gotta get to Jersey. Knicks or Nets? Same thing. Seriously Isles Fans, go take your complaints and hide in a corner somewhere.
Its bad enough that Wang tried desperately for over a decade to get a new arena. He's tried every which way possible, privately funded, publically funded, multiple schematics for the Lighthouse project, and each and every time, Hempstead (more notable Katie Murray) has basically said, go f- yourself. NASSAU DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE ISLANDERS AND THEIR FANS. So take the Barclays as a blessing. You got yourself a brand new arena in a very nice area of Brooklyn thats booming with business. You HAVE public transportation that gets you there. You'll HAVE a team thats not bankrupt. You'll HAVE the ability to draw the best players. You'll HAVE your historic rivalries and they'll be MUCH better. So here's the world's tiniest violin playing for ya, Islander Fans. I'm sorry you can't fist pump in your Mustangs and Camaros all the way to the game anymore. |

I agree this is just my opinion...people have a right to theirs..however many went WAY over the top and many went into it with a horrible attitude... |

You can't possibly expect fans to be ok with the "current" seating arrangement. That said; 24 months from now is a long time away, things can and most certainly will change. |

Funny thing is I think 200 or so seats out of almost 16,000 have an obstructed view. From the complaining you would think 8,000 seats were obstructed. Also If I hear one more person complain about the scoreboard not being directly over center ice I'm gonna crush them. Who gives a fack if the scoreboard is in the concourse |

The seating thats missing behind the goal is an issue. A great idea would be to have "portable" luxury seating behind. It really can't be that hard to setup a multi level staged floor with luxury seating. I work for a production company and its definitely very possible. If you can breakdown basketball seating and setup hockey seating in a few hours at the Garden, you most certainly can put up something as simple a 1 section of seating behind the goal. |

Simple enough cure: Identify the poor sight line seats. Exclude them from season-ticket packages and save them for day-of-game sales only or give them to the opposing team as their comp seats for players wives, families, etc.. BOOM. Problem solved. |

Funny thing is it says obstructed view on the ticket and the ticket is cheaper and people act shocked and outraged that they can't see everything |

BRAVO!! Nicely put... well done!!
I went to the game Saturday night and had great seats... Section 220, 2nd row on the corner near the goal Devils defended twice.
I was disappointed by the outcome and thought the game was HORRIBLE! But my seat angle and view was SPOT ON!!
That all said... here's my take...
There are hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders that commute on LIRR to Manhattan (a large percentage of them go through Atlantic Terminal to get a subway to lower Manhattan) and do it day in and day out for upwards of 20-30-40 years.
Is it a female dog?
Yes.
Does it suck?
Mostly.
Is it a part of life?
No doubt.
If someone lives on LI, works in lower Manhattan until 5, how often would they get to NVMC before 7? Subway, train, car, park.... It's doable, but THAT is a pain in the ass!
In 2 years from now, that person could take the same subway (monthly metrocard with no extra out of pocket $) but if they are taking the subway home through Brooklyn, it's a regular day. Then take a 2 1/2 hour break to watch the game before going home.
That same someone could use their monthly LIRR (so no extra out of pocket $) to take the train in on Saturday's and be right there.
Speaking for my self at this stage of my life, I live a couple minutes away from Jamaica LIRR station, and my $4 city ticket got me to the game. Promise not to tell the LIRR big-wigs that the train was too full for conductors to get my ticket?
I have a couple of issues with the amount of concessions, especially compared to the remodeled MSG, but it sure enough blows away what's available at NVMC. I understand we go to the game to watch the game and don't like the newer 'events' around the game for fans to be entertained (but that's another soapbox for another time). But some of those 'amenities' help the team generate income to help them compensate the players better and make themselves some money.
All in all, the experience was pretty cool. How often do you get to say "I was at the first..." for game/stadium events like this? |

I currently live in upstate New York and it takes me at least a 2 hour drive both ways (without traffic around the city and such) to make it to NVMC. The Islanders going to Brooklyn is a huge upside for me personally as I can now take mass transit to the game and have a lot less stressful trip to the game so the game instatly becomes more relaxing and fun.
Everyone will complain about the sightlines because NVMC is known to have some of the best in the bizz but I am sure they will be fine. My twitter actual had more supporters of the views then people against it saturday night!! Also the bar in the arena actually lets you see the ice unlike the NVMC where you are thrown into a basement!!
Listen like every move this team makes people will find reasons to hate and others will find reasons to love it, it is just the nature of all sports!! |

This is exactly what I said when I posted about the game at Barclays after I was actually there (unlike some armchair readers/posters)....
Theres like 300-400 obstructed view seats...some of which THEY DONT EVEN SELL...the other 15,500...think about that...FIFTEEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED SEATS...have fantastic views.
I walked the arena...into the gates atop 40-50% of the sections...every view was amazing. Even the nosebleeds (which I admit are steep) have great views. |

I wonder if the montreal fans will still take the bus to the Barclays. One time I was talking to a few fans and they said they follow the team across the east coast. I am guessing they don't work? |

Dan Petriw: The Barclays reality; an evolution of a fan base - Dan Petriw
I was at the game on saturday and i have to say the barclays center was awesome. All this talk of bad sightlines are ridiculous. The seats are bigger, the scoreboard is huge, and the sound system is awesome........contrary to the always blown speakers at the coliseum. Any talk of the scoreboard not being centered is absolutely ridiculous. All of the food is brooklyn based, Juniors, Pastrami sandwiches, Spumoni Gardens Pizza to name a few.
All that being said, i didnt feel like i was at a home game. It was bitter sweet. The coliseum might be old and run down, but its my barn.....always will be.

Most preseason games don't. It didn't feel like one watching it on tv. That will change in time though |

I couldn't make the game at Barclays unfortunately but I really want to see the Barclays center any good events coming? I bought tix for Green day last year but they rescheduled it for a day I had an exam in one of my classes last year so I missed my opportunity twice to seeing it. |
