While I agree with the comparisons to some other guys in the league, Katz is just pissing money down the drain and paying these guys earlier than he has to.
Pros:
1) Yak is capped at $6m next off season .. the table is set for this to happen and we wont have to overpay.
2) In a couple of years when the cap goes back up and RNH (hopefully) turns into the player he should, this and the other $6m contracts will look like a steal.
Cons:
1) He has yet to play a full season, only 100games or so in total
2) He is little and needs to fill out so he doesn't get hurt so frequently - kingbrehm
That's exactly it! You don't have to take such huge risks with these guys right now. Just about every team in the league is using bridge contracts for their young players because they want to see consistency before handing out big money and term. Maybe RNH is worth $6M a year but he hasn't proven it yet. Did the Hall and Eberle contracts paint the Oilers into a corner?
They've now got 3 forwards taking up $18M a year. They have no goalie signed for next season. What are they going to do with Justin Schultz who is a RFA after this season? How are they going to give Yakupov his money in a few seasons? There just doesn't seem to be a lot of foresight here. |

So if Yak had kept scoring at his pace last year (with a torrid finish) he still would have been worse than JT?
I never said Tavares was "well ahead" of anyone. I was just responding to another deluded poster who really wanted to hear how anyone could say he was better than any of those players after each year. I think I showed it pretty clearly. - djamon

Ok, so you give him $6M as well (seems to be the going rate for first overall picks in Edmonton) and now you have 4 forwards taking up $24M in cap space. You also have to pay 9 more forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Money is going to get very tight. - Jeffmt
Do yourself a favour and take a look around the league. |

Because you really don't know what's going to happen with these kids in a season or two. You have a pretty good idea but you don't know for sure. Why not just sign them for 2 years and reevaluate the situation after that? They'll still be restricted and Edmonton will still have control. That's what every other team in the league is doing. |
