I intend to get over to Finland to see Jokerit this season before they jump ship to join the KHL. Want to be able to see Teräväinen play in person.

For the Cubs Park game against Detroit - it's too bad they couldn't lay out the ice like the football field when the Bears used to play there - from the first base stands to the left field wall, adding those temporary seats on the "open" side of the field.

Bird Bird....what's the word.....is Hoss' injury back related ?

Hi Phil...

Upper body, but it's assumed to be his back.

I see a tough year for Hossa unfolding.

It's Wrigley Field, there is no Cubs Park, just like there is no Soldiers Field, Kaminsky Park or Bulls/Hawks Stadium.

I am curious to see if the majority of the outdoor games in baseball stadiums this year lean more towards what you are describing.

I think the NHL was still tinkering with the outdoor setup when they brought it to Chicago, perhaps now they can maximise the number of people they can jam into that arena with extra seating, etc.

Hell, this upcoming Winter Classic is going to be worth the watch, likely can fit 115,000+ into Michigan Stadium.

So the guy just turned 20 years old and already is getting a huge deal?

He's played 102 games and has 76 points and has already had a rather serious injury...and that's worthy of 6M a year?

So what are the Hawks gonna pay Toews and Kane going forward?

Instead of saying its gonna be a "tough" year, id like to call it a "carefully managed" year. Just to make it sound more positive. But ur right he's gonna miss his fair share of games cuz of that back(and hopefully nothing else). As long as he's ready come playoff time, then i can live with him only playing 60-65 regular season games.

Face it, these outdoor games are all about revenue. I was at the Winter Classic at Wrigley and also the game between UM and MSU at the big house. They sold 113k+ tickets and the scanned ticket attendance that day was 104k+

The baseball stadiums are really bad sight-lines for hockey, the football stadiums are better in general because of the way they are laid out, but because you are so far away from the action it is not any better. If you think the players look small from the 300 level in the UC, try it from the top row of the Big house (or Soldier Field soon).

How old were Toews / Kane when they got their deal?

I'm not saying N-H is equal to them, but they weren't much older when they signed the $6.3MM deals.

If you lay the ice out from either 1st base line - left field or 3rd base line - right field, you get excellent, close sight-lines; and, if you can get the temporary bleachers in the open space, pretty good attendance.

It looks like Toews was 22 when his EL deal ended with him hoisting the cup in 2010...so RNH is one year younger when receiving his bump.

Still seems absurd...but I guess it's the reality of today's NHL.

So much for that whole "Compete" speech that Eakins gave, which is replayed ad naseum on NHLNR.

It's just what teams do now, overpay your young studs now and hope that they develop and become a bargain at the end of the deal. Edmonton thinks RNH is going to turn in to Henrik Sedin, they better be right.

Which is why there are 5 additional games besides the Winter Classic and Heritage Classic. It's been incredibly obvious that $ signs are the first thing on everyone's minds when Bettman and co. are tacking on these additional events.

Yeah, that's understandable in terms of sight lines. Although plenty of people have paid and will pay to be present, even if they don't have a good view.

Hockey is certainly one of the most exciting sports to watch live, and an outdoor game is an interesting add-on to the experience and the atmosphere, even if the NHL is intent on taking out the relatively unique quality these kinds of games had up until now by carting out as many as they can fit in the schedule.

I think that a loss of Hoss (patent pending) for any length of time this year will cut deeper than the past couple of seasons, namely because the team does not necessarily have (m)any top-six stop-gaps.

In the previous couple of seasons, guys like Stalberg and Frolik could slide into the top six, and while certainly still a steep drop-off from 81, could handle the gig in the short term w/out disaster.

With the necessary jettisoning of depth vets this summer, the drop from Hossa to replacement might be a few more stories than previous seasons. Up-and-comers like Saad and Shaw could prove this hypothesis wrong, but with 17-25% of the forwards being (essentially) rookies, there are going to be a few bumps in the road along the way, maybe some real doozies if any of the top six misses significant time.

The big difference. It was after they won a Cup. Or at the very least made it to the playoffs. RNH hasn't proven anything other than he is injury prone.

Thank goodness CSN is airing this one. Should be a fun one to watch tonight with the kids vying for spots.

Any word on who's in net tonight for the Hawks?
