outside of LA, can anyone make an argument that SJ, Anaheim etc are unequivocally better at this point? not anyone who's using their heads and not just hating.

i personally have la and sj as the front runners, but its CERTAINLY debateable and it's tough to see vancouver out of the playoffs. sj is probably nearer the end of the line than vancouver is and could implode.

I understand that the canuck's demise is at the top of many christmas lists this year but to say they will 'just scrap into the playoffs' is a statement made by someone who knows nothing about NHL hockey or is just hate'n.

Most of the NHL teams are not profitable on their own. Buffalo sells every seat before the season starts and breaks even. What does that tell you about the state of the NHL? Sure Canadian markets make profits, but that's selling tickets at 4 times NFL costs.

If I understand Ek's point, I would say teams that have been strong contenders for a while now but haven't taken it to the next level. Therefore, they make a bold move in an effort to go all-in now. I don't know if that's even desperation per se. By that critertia I would say Vancouver, San Jose, Washington, and the Rangers might fall into that category. Not desperate, but ready to make a move that prioritizes the present.

As for the Leafs, the pressure is always on and desperation is a constant, they kind of transcend this question.
